Applying filters in VS10+ results in shimmering video

Post by Norman »

I have captured video from a mini dv camera using VS10+.
I have been using a proprietary tutorial called seeitdoit.tv.
The resultant video when viewed on my PC is of fairly good quality.
I have applied titles and also transitions between the frames.
But when I apply filters such as colour (to adjust over or under exposure), noise reduction (to reduce wind noise) or simply apply the mute function the quality of the video drops significantly (shimmering at edges of subjects and straight lines).
I contacted Corel support by email but have to say they were less than useless and kept referring to MovieFactory for reasons only they can know.
Eventually they decided that the task was just too hard and suggested that I use telephone support. I would be extremely reluctant to use this option since I would be paying for what could turn out to be more useless information.
I have tried searching the forum for help but some of the subject lines are very vague and I don't really have time to look at the 12,000+ entries in detail.
Posting in hope and with fingers crossed Norman

the reported shimmering on edges and straight lines usually occur when rendered in the incorrect field order...but since all you are doing is adding effects and filters I can;t see this would cause such a drop.

in the instances of your projects with the added filters and effects why settings do you choose when burning to DVD?

Have you tried firstly re-rendering the captured video with the filters and adjustments to the same video file and then add that video file to the project (already adjusted and filtered etc)

My other question is...is the drop in quality as pre the preview pane or the finished DVD? (it's not very clear in your OP). If it is a drop in quality in the preview pane it's normal for a drop in quality with the "instant playback" setting because it basically redering on the fly.

I hope some thing here helps.

Workflow?

Post by 2Dogs »

Hi Norman,

could you let us know your workflow?

Are you capturing to DV type 1 avi, and using that on your timeline - or are you capturing direct to mpeg-2?

You should make sure that the field order in your project properties or output file properties is set to lower field first - VS might default to upper field first, which, as Clevo has said, might be the cause of your problem.

Can you post the properties of your source video (i,e of the clips used on the timeline) and any output you may have created, for example if using "Share>Create Video File".

You might also experiment with a short project, say only a minute or two long, or output to a video file from a small selection of your project, since it will then be much quicker to work out the bugs.

Needless to say, when you have everything working as it should, you should not see a reduction in picture quality such as you describe.
