Window media player - Ulead MPEG-2 issues

Post by robtywlak »

FYI - Windows media player does not like the Ulead MPEG-2 codec used in MSP8. No matter how fast your PC is it will choke on playback of anything over 15-20 Mbit bitrate. It can't play the 25 MBit HDV files on my Dual core Athalon 3.2 GHz (6400+ X2).

Microsoft has a utility that checks the MPEG-2 codec compatibility and the ULEAD one fails. Even the Nero one does not get 100% compliance though it is better.

Regards,

Have you tried a more standard MPEG-2 player? WMP tries to be a be-all, so that it has in-built compromises. The fact that it needs a utility to tell you what it can and can't play should warn you where the problem lies.

Which player do you recomend?

Also during HDV capture the video is very jerky and freezes a lot - just like playback through WMP.... wonder if the same issue is occuring.

The captured file is fine though - done 4 tapes at one hour each without a dropped frame.

It is quite normal for the monitoring during capture to be jerky. Priority is given to the capture proper and any resources left over are used for the display. Several versions ago (can't remember the number), there was no sound during capture, just to have more resources for the work in hand. It may have been ~v. 6 where audio came in, as computers had more power.

My favourite player (much better than WMP) is the Ulead one that was bundled with MF3DC. I think this was discontinued as there was a licensing problem or something. I still use it on my video computer.
