Problem with sound

Post by Flako »

Hi... First of all forgive me because of my bad English... I´m from Buenos Aires, Argentine.

My problem is similar to some of other people, but not the same.

I was trying to edit a video of my parents´holiday, where my father filmed with a Sony Handycam HDD 6.1 megapixels (DCR-SR300).
I downloaded de videos (MPEG) directly from the videocamera to my computer by USB. When I played them in Windows Media, they were allright (video and sound), but when I opened them in VS 9.0, the sound didn´t appear, neither in preview nor project.
Here are the details of the archive:

Formato de archivo: NTSC DVD
Tamaño (size): 27.360 Kb
Duración: 23.524 sec
Tipo de video: MPEG-2, Campo superior primero
Total de cuadros (frames): 705
Atributos: 24 Bits, 720 x 480, 16:9
Velocidad de cuadros (frames): 29.970 fps
Velocidad de datos de vídeo: Variable (Máx. 9100 kbps)
Tipo de audio: Audio Dobly Digital
Atributos de audio: 48 KHz, 2/0 (L,R)
Capa: None
Velocidad: 448 Kbps

On the other hand, when I played other videos, they sound ok. For example, a video that I captured with AverMedia, AverTV WDM Video Capture (Silicon) from an 8mm videocamera. Here are the details:

Formato de archivo: NTSC DVD
Tamaño (size): 2.332.978 Kb
Duración: 2.163.096 sec
Tipo de video: MPEG-2, Campo inferior primero
Total de cuadros (frames): 64.828
Atributos: 24 Bits, 720 x 480, 4:3
Velocidad de cuadros (frames): 29.970 fps
Velocidad de datos de vídeo: Variable (Máx. 8000 kbps)
Tipo de audio: Audio LPCM
Atributos de audio: 48 KHz, 16 bit, Estéreo
Capa: (nothing is written)
Velocidad: (nothing is written)

Please help me with this situation so as I can make a present for my parents´aniversary.

Thanks a lot

Dolby

Hi Flako and welcome to the forum!

Unfortunately, I believe your problem is caused by your version of VS9 not supporting Dolby audio. There used to be an (expensive!) Dolby add-on for VS9, but to be honest you might be better off upgrading to the latest version 11.5 which has full Dolby support.

¡Hola, Flako! ¡Sea bienvenido al foro! Espero que no eres demasiado 'flaco'!!
Tipo de audio: Audio Dolby Digital
This is the centre of your problem. I don't know which exact version of VS9 you are using, but the full version of VS9 could only handle Dolby audio with a Dolby plug-in you had to buy for US$29.99 if I remember correctly. But that plug-in has not been available for at least the last couple of years, since VS9 has been overtaken by VS10 and VS11 (which is now VS11.5+). Dolby is included in the full versions of both VS 10 and 11.

And if your version of VS9 has the letters SE after it, it indicates that it is a special edition which I am pretty certain would not accept the Dolby plug-in anyway, even if you could buy it.

So your options are to either upgrade your version of Video Studio to one which can handle Dolby, or else use another program to convert the mpeg-2 from your father's camera, including its audio, to mpeg-2 once again, but this time using one of the audio formats that VS9 can "see' -- namely, either (L)PCM or mpeg layer 2 audio. Both of these formats can be used in DVDs.

I can't remember what TV system you have in Argentina (pasei tres años en Brasil y dos años en Chile), but though mpeg layer 2 is not technically part of the NTSC DVD standard, in practice most NTSC DVD players will play it.

Mr. Berry... Thanks a lot for your hopes... I had my nickname (Flako) since I was 10 (I´m 25 now)... jajajaja
Que bueno que pueda comunicarme con Ud in English, en Español e em Portugûes (eu falo português tb).

Could you recomend me a program to convert the mpeg-2 from my father's camera, including its audio, to mpeg-2 once again, but this time using one of the audio formats that VS9 can "see' -- namely, either (L)PCM or mpeg layer 2 audio?

Thanks - Gracias - Obrigado
