VHS to DVD display problems

Post by Loris »

I have copied VHS tapes to DVD's using my DVD recorder. I would like to be able to edit/combine some of them, but when I play them on my computer, (either in Ulead or other programs) there is a flashing horizontal line at the bottom of it. Does anyone know what the problem might be?
Thank you!!!!

If you burn one to disk as a test you may see it dissapear. I have experienced this in the past. It seems to be noise or tracking of some sort but ends up below the viewable area.
Now using Adobe Premiere and Photoshop

Thanks for your response! I tried burning it, and it is gone when I play the new burned DVD on the TV, but it still shows up on the computer. I guess the problem is getting better, but I would still like to know if there is a way to play it on my computer without the line.
Thanks again!

Hi

When viewing on a TV
You loose 10 to 15% of the video around the edges due to overscan
VS uses a ¡¥Safe Area¡¦ to indicate the portion that will defiantly be in view.

Viewing on the internet, your pc, no overscan, what you see is what you have, lines and all.

To remove these you may have to use filters or masks to crop the frames removing the lines.
A lot of work and probably not worth the effort.

OK
Other than using the various filters etc:-
Drag the video into the overlay track, expand the frame to hide the lines.
Render the project to a new file

The "safe area" explanation makes sense, I never thought of that. I have had problems with images getting cut off going from PC to TV, if I wasn't careful. But how do I "expand the frame" to hide the lines on the overlay track?

Thanks!

Hi Loris

Stretching the frame or distorting the frame may result in some quality reduction.

You can apply ¡¥distort¡¦ in the top/main track using VS 10/11
For VS 9 use the overlay track. (right click the frame in the preview window, fit to screen.)

VS 10 From the ¡¥attributes¡¦ tab tick ¡¥Distort¡¦

Using your keyboard arrow keys nudge down
Using your mouse drag the upper trim handle to fill frame

You may wish to apply to the vertical to keep the aspect ratio.

You do not say which version you are using
