9 Gig dvr-ms file, ULead 11+ insists that it is 17 sec long
The clip will play past the 17 sec limit but there is no way for me to adjust the timeline to anything past 17 seconds.
The 40 minute file is fine, it plays in media player with no problem.
If I convert the file to avi the resultant file is only 17 sec long.
I cannot adjust the preview boundaries to greater than 17 sec.
HELP

What clip? What format is it? Where did it come from? What 40 minute file? You have told us nothing.

what clip: 9 gigabyte (40 minute) file from a canon high res camera, captured by ms-vista movie maker.
what format: dvr-ms
project goal: insert an audio file at precisely 2min 32 sec from the beginning of the clip.
problem: can't adjust timeline preview range past 17 sec
Maybe someone else has had this problem.

Clevo -- I have been staying out of this one because I have no idea what is happening. However, the format is one developed by Microsoft. Essentially, it is DVD-compatible mpeg-2, but has extra metadata encoded in it, particularly with regard to Microsoft's favourite 'digital rights management'. It is definitely one of the formats that you can insert in either the library pane or timeline of VS...

I thought it was one of thouse simple preview range issues but it seems more complicated than that and more akin to a corruption of the video file.Ken Berry wrote:Clevo -- I have been staying out of this one because I have no idea what is happening. DVR-MS
Hi,
I have found that VS11 does not handle DVR-MS files correctly.
When doing a batch convert I am getting some seconds of the file converted to mpeg but then a frozen picture to the end of the file without any error message.
When converting with VS10 there is no problems!
When converting with VS11 I get two indexfiles only (Audio and Video) but with VS10 I get directly a mpeg-file!
I have been in contact with Corel technical support and they asked me to send my file to them which I did 2 month ago but no answer so far.

DVR-MS
Hi Ken,
I agree with you and I myself never use that file format but in this case I tried to help a friend who had captured a film from TV with his Media Center and that gave him the file in DVR-MS format.
As Corel says VS11+ should be able to handle and convert DVR-MS I was disappointed when it did not. (My friend bought VS11+ for that reason). As I said it was no problem with VS10!
I suppose the problem is the new IVI Capture Component that you can't change. In VS10+ I used Ulead Direct Show Capture Plug-in which worked well.

I initially tried (and tried) to capture using ulead 10 and 11, but kept on getting capture errors after a few minutes. I believe that my firewire cable was the culprit.
The reason I captured in dvr-ms is because I use my daughter's vista laptop with movie maker and a good cable. I will have to investigate further to see if another format was possible.
I borrowed the canon hd dvr so recapturing will be difficult for me, I'm stuck with the dvr-ms files.
I will try using ULead 10 to read the dvr-ms.
Thanks

Movie Maker will allow you to capture in DV format. In fact, the early versions of Movie Maker would *only* allow capture in DV format; then it was expanded to the proprietary windows media formats developed by Microsoft.
So if you can capture in DV, that would resolve the problem since it is in any case IMHO the best or easiest format to edit in. After editing is finished, you then convert it to DVD-compatible mpeg-2 and burn that to DVD.

Lars Erik Gustafsson,
Because you filled out your system specs and posted your operating system maybe I can add some information.
There are some inconsistencies between XP pro, XP Media Center, Vista and what version of MovieMaker used to capture the video and/or convert, along with the proper codecs installed on your operating system to correctly read these files.
Under Vista Home Premium and using MovieMaker 6 I can capture from my Sony HC3 High Def camcorder in the dvr.ms high definition file format, which are in HighDefinition format and then use them in VS11+. They work with one exception, the dvr-ms file is writing them as square pixels. So in VS11+ I have to turn off "perform non-square pixel rendering". (Note: I could only get this to work once, other dvr-ms files cannot load, are not read correctly or lock up the computer.)
I have not been able to use Windows XP to capture in the high definition format using Window Movie Maker, only in the DV format which is standard definition. (As Ken stated)
I will have to test this out a little more what's happening if you capture in Vista and then try to read these dvr-ms files under XP using VS11+.
I'll post back at least what I can find out.
I suggest if someone is having a problem, and want to add audio to the dvr-ms file (as in the original post), then use MovieMaker in it's timeline mode to add the audio files and then export the video out to a new file.
As Ken Berry pointed out my version of Moviemaker in XP will only allow me to capture in the DV format (or convert to other formats).

Well, no luck at all.
The only program I could get to read the dvr-ms files correctly was Nero Version 8, which uses Nero Vision 4.
I only solution I could come up with if you don't have Nero Vision 4 was to reload the videos back into MM6 and export them out as a mpeg2 dvd compliant video file from MM6.
I recommend the users to call/write to tech support.
