Can't use Edit Room or Split/Join video with AVCHD

Post by Dobs »

I have an Canon HG10 camcorder that splits my video into 2 gig files, so if I record an hour of straight video, I am left with 4-5 separate m2ts files. Normally that wouldn't be a problem as I was just planning on using the "join" functionality in MF6 or go to the edit room at append clips that way (I do it all the time with other videos). However, MF6+ (with HD pack) disables the edit room and join/split buttons for me after I import an AVCHD clip into my project. Why is that? Is there any way for me to join these into a single clip (either inside MF or outside....without re-encoding)

Anyone have any feed back on this? I noticed that I can join video in the MF 5.6 SE version that came with my camcorder, but that is a limited version. It doesn't have all the other features of 6+ that I want. It seems odd that the scaled down free version can do this but the full version cannot. Is this just something that was overlooked in 6+? How do the rest of you guys get around this? It is pretty common for AVCHD camcorders to split their videos into 2 gig chunks.

I have the exact same problem -- the buttons are grayed out... have a feeling it is a bug related to the splitting off of the HD Power pack as an addon. This was previously included in 5.6 as you mentioned.

Dobs & frog270,
This version of MF6+ with or without updates/patches nor the HD-Add-On pack edits in the TS (transport stream) or avchd format.
VS11+ can edit these files directly but any editor seems to struggle somewhat because of the high compression used in the avc/h264 format.

If you have VS11+ you can also use a VS11+ project in MF6+. I've used VS11+ a few times using VS11+ project.

Thanks for the reply --- do have a question regarding your use of VS 11... does that product do anything that MovieFactory does not? In other words, is it really worthwhile having both products?

frog270,
It's an easier interface for editing video.
VS11+ is more of an editor, depends what you want to do with your videos.

I'm retesting the use of proxies again with MF6+ and I'll post back the results.
Had an error when I made a large project using proxies.

What kinds of stuff will MF6+ do that VS11+ doesn't? Just trying to see why I would need both products if at all.

Thanks!

I had to edit my previous post, it gets to technical to make proxy files work with MF6+. You can, but you need to first export the project a new avc/h264 video file before authoring. A few do's & don'ts involved.

I guess if you want to join/edit them then use VS11+.

You can compare the differences between VS11+ and MF6+ on the ulead website.
MF6+ is mainly a disk authoring package with limited editing.

I'll play around with joining them a little more.
