PI X3 forgets my preferences
PI X3 forgets my preferences
Quick note for developers: after installing version X3 PI STILL forgets my preferences...STILL have to keep iedit12.cfg read-only.
Yes it is still in Ulead folder and is called Iedit12.cfg
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead PhotoImpact\12.0\Ulead.DAT\ Iedit12.cfg
Other: Is there a way to get rid of the blue upper bar in the software where it says Photoimpact? Or is it because of it is a Vista compatible version? It would also be nice to have smaller express fix / full edit button. Could they be customized to show up smaller or just have it turn off all together? I have to put some buttons elsewhere because it takes up 1/4 of the bar.

I've checked the properties for that file on my system and is not set to Read Only. PI does retain my Preferences settings. I don't know why your OS is setting the Properties of that file to Read Only.
Also the blue bar at the top, is no different then what's been around. The color of it, and other attributes are based partly on what you have set in your Windows Display settings. That bar can not be removed. I don't know of any programs that do not post the name of the program in the top bar of the window.
You might post these "wish-list" items in the Wish List for Future Versions thread.
Your available workspace is also dependent on your screen size and resolution. I've noticed while working on my laptop, which has a 15" screen, I have less workspace then with my desktop with a 19" monitor. Then if you reduce the resolution down, this will decrease the amount of space, ie; 1280 x 1024 verses 1024 x 768.

Thanks for your answers....
1. The file is not read-only after install, but I have to make it such otherwise it just reverts back every time I start X3. So I have to set everything up as I like and then make the cfg file read-only to have my settings as I leave them after exiting the software. In any case the problem with the settings came with PI12, I never had any problem with PI4-11....
2. The top bar is my mistake. The new colorful design just made it more prominent. I wish they had a set up where the whole page could be given a less colorful look. It is friendly but sometimes annoying when working with colors. There should be a colorless setting.
3. I use 1024x768 as most people do, even if professionals have the money for huger screens. Anyway it would be great if the ExpressFix part could be removed as well, if somebody need more space for the buttons. When I click Customize/Tool bars it is there but can not be unticked :0(

I have this same problem and it's very frustrating. I even opened up a ticket w/ Corel and they told me that I had to pay for support because they've never heard of this problem. Blah!
I am running XP and was using PI11 and then bought PIX3.
I'll try read only and see if it works for me after I update my preferences just like I like it.

Re: PI X3 forgets my preferences
On a new install of a boxed version of PhotoImpact X3 on a Vista machine with no prior PhotoImpact installation, the version number is 13.0, not 12.0.petgabor wrote:Quick note for developers: after installing version X3 PI STILL forgets my preferences...STILL have to keep iedit12.cfg read-only.

C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Ulead PhotoImpact\13.0\Ulead.DAT\IEDIT2.CFG
I got a solution
I posted the same problem and it was because my splash screen was enabled. The minute I disabled it from popping up every time I opened PI, the preferences stayed.
I think it has to be a bug and hopefully Corel will address this with a patch because I do customize my preferences a lot.
I did try changing to Read only the Iedit.CFG file and it didn't help earlier.
Hope this helps you.

It is quite simple really..... create your own workspace with PIX3 exactly how you want it then SAVE the .xum in the c:ProgramFiles/Corel/PIX3/Profiles folder and also export a copy to another HDD if possible.
If you're not sure how to make a workspace look here:
http://creative-designs.com.au/pix3/customworkspace/
Your PIX3 will open the same way every time without a hitch.
Sometimes a .xum can corrupt, hence saving it twice.
Save your workspace each time you add/remove settings and or anything to your EP.
You can also stop the splash screen from appearing at the begining too by right clicking on the PIX3 icon on your desktop, Properties, in the Target bar at the end after iedit.ex" add a space then /n .
Don't forget to add another space between the n and .
You won't be plagued by that startup splash screen.

Re: PI X3 forgets my preferences
Hi,
We have seven PI 12 and X3 licenses and two of them (not the others) have always had this problem. I have asked Ulead/Corel twice and the only reply I have got is to remove and reinstall PI. It does NOT help. I have even tried reinstalling the whole XP operating system but finally the results with PI were the same. Every five launches or so, PI loses all the preferences. There is no logic in how this happens. You can close PI, do nothing but immediately relaunch it, and the preferences can be gone. It is very annoying.
We have used PI since version 3, and as someone mentioned, this problem was never there but crept in with version 12.
Thank you for this suggestion of manually editing the configuration file properties, I will try that. By the way, I also asked Ulead/Corel where the preferences are stored but never got a reply either. Well, thanks for that info as well!
Concerning the other suggestion here: how do you disable the splash screen? Can someone verify that removing the splash screen really cures this "forget the preferences" problem?
Best Regards
Paheikki

Perhaps I can help
I have a friend who's an engineer w/Corel and has provided me with some really good info re the program, so perhaps I can ask him.
Since I disabled the Splash screen from showing up I've had no problems!
~H~
P.S. Also, expect some news re a new merged program coming out in the future..........

Re: Perhaps I can help
Hi and thanks! Info from someone who knows the innards of PI would be appreciated a lot!
Could you please tell how you disabled the splash screen?
Merging PI and PaintShop would make sense to me. Especially now that there is a funny situation: the English version of PI X3 is not officially sold in Europe! Well, I can actually buy a copy from the North American site, and I could buy a German version from the German site, but not an official "European" English version from the UK site. Corel's support said that this is a "Corel policy". Seems like a strange policy to me.

Hi there Pahekkei (Hope I spelled it rihgt)
It's called a Welcome Screen and is a default when you first install PI. You can click on a little box to disable it to keep it from appearing when you open PI again and again. You will find that if you want to enable it, go to the Menu Bar and click on Window>Welcome Screen to enable it.
Hope this helps!

Oops. I have always call "splash screen" the little one that appears before PI launches.
This welcome screen, yes, I have disabled that. But the preferences are swept away every other day. Then the welcome screen is there again, and all the settings lost again...so the real culprit is elsewhere.
