Sorry Steve,
I can't do this via the forum, as there seems to be a problem with joining and posting to the forum (please if you do get chance to reply, could you also send a copy the hot mail address <removed>, as well as this work address? Could it be put on the forum for the benefit of other
users?)
1.
I started getting this problem in the middle of last year.
Version 10+
(I had set up a 'lean' Video editing profile)
Software was working great, especially when I followed your recommended (it was not working otherwise (i.e. intuitively) despite what Ulead now say on the forum, above your posts).
However, about 6 months later, in my normal profile (this started after a few software additions and updates to Windows XP Pro, but it is too late now to go back to that restore point) during the start-up phase, when the 'resident' programmes load themselves up, I started to get two instances of the Microsoft problem screens related to Ulead VideoStudio, without even VideoStudio being loaded up. At first I religiously clicked 'send the error reports to Microsoft', but never got any information back. After 5 months of this I just started clicking the don't send button.
Fortunately, at this time the problem did not occur in the very lean user profile I had set-up for video editing, using the tips from another contributor to the forum.
I had not used the VS software for a while, but this weekend I did, and also I started getting the error message in the 'lean' user profile. The problem occured when the videostudio GUI loaded up, but whilst the first Ulead splash screen was still on the centre of the screen.
I tried all the clean reinstall procedures and the directX updates, as suggested on the Forum, but to no avail.
I did find a tip on the internet to delete instances of uvs.ini in the documents settings folders. I tried this and it worked. However, although it did not crash at first, I have had a couple of interruptions due to 'encountered a problem' errors, this happened not while using the program, but subsequently on restarting the program. Deleting another instance of uvs.ini seemd to stop this (so far).
Do you know why this uvs.ini file is apparently causing the problem? Have you heard of this before?
I was surprised this fix worked, as I thought the problem must be due to either a Microsoft update, or one of the other new programs, loading up a new version of a .dll file that VideoStudio needed, but that was now incompatible with version 10+. BTW Have there been any patches to version
10+ to address such dll problems? I have not found anywhere on the Ulead
site where such patches are available for download.

My main question is regarding some downloaded, flash video, guitar tutorials off YouTube (*.flv format) that I want to put on to DVD using VideoStudio. I tried to use the freeware SUPER to convert these files to a format that VS10+ can recognise. NB I tried MPEG4, which did not seem to work with VS10+ (VS 10+ said that the converted files had no video content, although they played fine in standard Windows players), and *.wmv and *.
MP2, formats, which both did work. I used the encoders and default
setting suggested by the SUPER GUI pop-up advisor, and I found that the quality was slightly better with the converted *.MP2 files than with the *.wmv files. For both of these latter conversions I set the bit rate to a level only slightly higher than the original. NB When SUPER analysed the original flv files it showed that generally they had been created using bitrates of about 300-400 kbps. I read on the internet that there is no point in using a bitrate significantly higher than that of the original. Is that true? NB Eventually I want to watch the DVD on TV.
My question is should I set VideoStudio to this low bitrate? Plus are there any other recommendations for the various steps in the procedure I am trying to follow, i.e. regarding conversion formats and bitrate settings etc. In other respects I would intend to follow the recommended procedure I have used for my DV camcorder (have nothing in timeline when.. etc).. But what would be the best project setting in this case to match these flash clips?
Thanks,
John
ps I think, if it is possible to get answers to the above, then it would be worth posting them. I could not find the information in one place to answer these questions. OF course it is probably out there somewhere on the internet.

Clean re-installation
Although VS10+ (after deleting the uvs.ini files) was not crashing on load up, I was still getting the 'microsoft has to close message', when it was not even opened. Also it was randomly crashing at the end of very simple, short encoding tests. Clearly something was amiss.
Within my video editing profile I uninstalled the program following the 'cleaning procedures' stated by Steve Jones and others, but the additional trick was that I got rid of all instances of uvs.ini, then re-installed VS10+.
The software then encoded successfully a short trial clip converted from flv format to wmv by the SUPER software. Following this success I tried encoding a 2 hour series of wmv clips and this was also successful.
I have not shutdown the computer so I don't know if problems may return after a re-start. I have decided to leave the computer on and try to complete the work in an extended session over several days rather risk a re-boot.
I will let people know if the DVD burning is also successful.
