Unfinished movie in VS 10 want to work on it in VS 11
I am new to editing. Did a little editing in Ulead VS 10 of my daughter. Now upgraded to VS 11 Plus. Wanted to continue to work on this project. VS 11 could not open the file. Tried to Relink but all that linked up was the music and the Title page. How do I get back the project and work on it in VS11.

We need a lot more information. Please read the top sticky post on this Board which says "Please read this before posting" -- http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... 1454#41454 . Then come back with the information and someone may be able to help.

Hi Ken
I have added some info on the Profile. The bits I understood. please advise if you need others. I have looked at the Help menu on Ulead on VS 11 and could not find anything to help me. Perhaps I am unfamiliar with the terms needed. I have tried down loading the manual but it stops 3/4 way through. I have read through the topics of help and done a search putting in
Updating files created in VS 10 to VS 11 and did not find anything that appeared to help.
Sorry Ken I need some help here.
What other info do you need from me?

Hi Ken
I have also had a look in VS 10 because I thought oh well I will finish it in that. I could see the thumbnail clicked on that but a window popped up saying this file no longer existed. It also guiided me to relink. The only thing that came up said there was a file mismatch.
I'm thinking it may be easier to just start again in Ulead 11
But I'd like to try and understand what went wrong so that it does not repeat.
If I renamed the folder that all thease files are in at any stage would that be the problem. The files all still have tha same names?

Thje information we need relates to the format of the video that was used in the project. If you have mixed video from various sources, then we need to know all the different formats that were used. We also need to know what editing you did, also what project settings you were using if they were different from the format of the video in it.
If you renamed the folder where the video was stored, yes, that would confuse Video Studio. Normally, though, if you get the Relink message, you just browse to where the renamed folder is, and point at the file and it will relink. It has to be exactly the same, not one frame more or less, or else you get the file mismatch error message.
Similarly, if you used any video that was, say, on a DVD but didn't transfer it to your hard drive, then VS won't be able to 'see' the video any longer unless you put the DVD back in the drive. Or if you had video on an external drive which is no longer connected to the computer or switched on, VS will not be able to see the files.
One basic fact you need to know is that though you created a project file, and probably regularly saved it in VS 10, that project file is really only a small text file which contains no video or audio files itself. It is really only like a kind of road map for Video Studio. It tells the program what video and other files were used in the project, how big they are (exactly) and where they are located; what editing was done to them; what format they might have been converted to etc.

The format that was used was video 8 only. The footage came from one source only. The file was avi. The file in the folder is saved as a vsp file.
The original footage is from an hour long tape but I only editied out about 4 minutes worth. I was using the multitrim function. I had added a music track and placed a beginning title and end title.
all the original files from the camera are on the hard drive.
I know 4 mins is not very much and I could simply redo but I'm just trying to see what is happening and learn from the experience.
Thank you for the facts about what is happening in these project files.
hope I have answered what you asked me for.

Well, there are a few no-no's at play here, at least for me they are.
- 1 whether you start a project in one version and finish off in another is a good idea depends on what you did. Generally speaking, once started in one version, it's best to finish in that version.
2 Vsp files are downward compatible which means you should be able to open a VS 10 project in VS 11 but the reverse is not possible.
3 Vsp files are nothing but small text files which tell VS where the source files reside on the HDD, what their names are and what you did with them where by time code.
4 the source files are never changed by anything you do in a project. To save your changes as a video, you have to go to the share stage and create a new file. Saving the project only creates that text file, nothing else.
5 that, of course, explains why your project file does not find your source files. As you said, you changed the folder name and, hence, VS doesn't know where your files are.

Yes I think I will do that in the future.

That's the way I am going.

Yes that's what I did do

I think this might be the core to the problem but what confuses me is when prompted to 'Relink' I point vs to the new folder the files appear. and (I never touched the file names) But I can't open them.
thanks heinzoz for your input.
When you are prompted to "Re-link", point VS to the new folder. As long as the file names have not changed, it should relink quickly.[/quote]
