HELLO ALL

Post by Coach T »

I have used a trial version of the Video Studio application and liked what I was able to do with it but I'm no expert by any means.

I used it exclusively to do football cut-up tapes for my football practices nothing too fancy.

I would like to be able to make highlight tapes for my young players and would like to be able to spot shadow, place arrows as well as have various effects (much like the NFL Network) to identify the player that a scout might want to look at.

What programme do you think would be the best for that purpose.

Thanks in advance

Hi Coach,

Since you're still using XP, MediaStudio Pro 8 (MSP) would work great for this. It's a little more pricey than VideoStudio (VS).

MSP has a steeper learning curve, is being discontinued by Corel, and does not support the later HD formats such as AVCHD h.264. However it is considered a pro-sumer product, you have a lot more flexibility using motion paths, using chroma-key, lumi-key, mattes etc. You can have up to 99 video and audio tracks, nested timelines, titles are placed on any of the video tracks. Oh and MSP is not supported under Vista.

VS on the other hand is a consumer product, is very much what Corel wants to develop. The Plus version provides you with a 7 video tracks (1-main, and 6-overlay), supports the latest HD formats, however is limited with motion paths. VS is supported under Vista.

If you have a machine that you're not going to upgrade to Vista, I would recommend MSP 8. If not, VS would be the one to use.

Since you've tried out VS, why not download the MSP8 trial, and see if it adds up to what your're looking for.

In order to do what you want it may also be necessary to get VideoGraphicsLab http://www.ulead.com/vgl/runme.htm

WHAT PROGRAMME SHOULD I USE

Post by Coach T »

I thank you all for your comments but then realized that I had not updated my profile since the last time I posted.

I bought this new system about 4 months ago.

Does that change anything???

To the gentleman who attached the YouTube clip, I'm not sure but I did not see any highlighting effects.

Please help

With Vista, that would eliminate MSP as a choice. Corel has decided to drop it as one of the products supported and offered, and is not Vista compatible. Some have managed to get it to work with Vista, but I would not want to depend on it.

So with that, VS11+ would seem the way to go. There are several ways to do highlighting using just VS11+, using PI, VGL, or there are some specialty applications for this type of an effect.

Here's an example I done last week, using just VS;

MrA,
I failed to see any highlighting in your example too. What's the relevance to this Post?

VIDEO EFFECTS

Post by Coach T »

VIDOMAN

Thank you for your usual prompt repsonses.

That effect is exactly one of the one's that I was looking for.

What is it called and I'm also looking for the ability to place an arrow above or below the person that I'm pointing out.

Two more that I'm looking for are ones that I saw on football clips.

It looked like a energy was travelling from a players feet up to his arm and out of the ball as a QB threw it

AND

the other one is during a hit where the person's body looked like it had been x-rayed and one could see the player's skeleton being crushed by a ferocious hit.

What can you tell me about those and I'm not all that familiar with the acronyms and abbreviations that seem to be typically used to refer to programmes and the like so if it's not too much trouble can you please spell out the things that you are referring to.

Thanks in advance for your always appreciated posts.

Ok the lingo (acronyms) first:

VS=VideoStudio, and generally when it comes to the latter versions 10 and 11, we will go ahead and use the + (Plus) referring to the version that has the additional 6 overlay tracks. The standard versions will not have the Plus, and only 1 overlay track.

MSP=MediaStudio Pro, 8 being the current (last) version. It is the "pro-sumer" level. Leans more towards a professional, or real serious hobbiest.

DVDMF or DMF=DVD MovieFactory, the DVD authoring program.

C3D=Cool 3D, C3DPS=Cool 3D Production Studio, are 3D programs for doing titles, and models to be used in video productions or for images.

VGL= Video Graphics Lab, is 2 programs Video Paint, and CG Infinity. Used to be included with earlier versions of MSP, but was separated with the release of MSP8, and released as stand-alone applications.

PI=PhotoImpact, current version is PI x3, professional image editing suite.

Now for the effects, here is my post where I offered that example. I have a screen shot of the settings used: http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... 533#144533

The other effects you may need to invest in a specialty program to create those effects. Howver VS does provide some filters such as a Lightning filter. The X-ray is something I'd have to do some research on to see what filters may be able to create that. As it stands I would suspect using an image of a skeleton as part of the effect.

The energy effect could be done using maybe the wind filter, or motion filter in VS.

The last one, energy traveling up the player, would be more difficult to reproduce, but may still be doable. Without seeing this effect, I can't really say right now. Possibly post a link to an example for us to look at.

The arrow is super simple, as VS provides an arrow image clip. ;)

I have recently created a tutorial showing how this can be achieved using nothing other than VideoStudio.

Using VideoStudio to highlight a moving person or object.

Coach, actually you did, but, without knowing it. The "highlight" was the replay in slo-mo.

I know exaclty what you are looking for, for team training purposes, you want to, maybe darken the video, except for that key player, or play.

I think the others have pointed you in the correct direction.

Using Video Studio, you are asking for a lot of extra un-needed work. Meaning, if you plan to do this quite often, and it will be very tedious, I'd look into getting a prosumer editor. VS is a consumer editor.
