I have searched through as many threads as possible, but cannot see that this has been covered. Apologies if it has - and some kind soul can point me in the right direction.
Have been a VS user for around 10 years, man and boy. Now using it to capture from my trusty (and old) JVC GR-DVL367 about 4 hours of video taken on a recent holiday. XP Home. Athlon2000. 512RAM. 120Gb HD. Firewire.
I'm half way through capturing in avi format (ie have captured and edited about 2 hours) - I prefer it this way as I can do only one render to MPEG2 at the end of each edit.
All of a sudden I am now I getting an error message when I try to capture...
"Failed to initialize the video capture plug-in. Another program may be using it or the file has been moved.
The live connection cannot be initialized. This might be a hardware detection problem or the correct capture driver cannot be located.
15001:71:1
15023:4:2"
No other software is running. The source on the capture screen is shown as Adaptec AHA394x DV. If I click on DV Quick Scan I get the DV Quick Scan and Capture Wizard - and can access the camcrder - but not the Capture Video mode.
As far as I am aware no settings have been changed since I last captured video - about 72 hours ago. I have reinstalled VS10 re-booted but still get the ubiquitous error message. From (failing) memory I had this problem a year or so ago - but cannot remember how it was resolved - or whether it just 'went away'. Must make more notes!
Any help out there?

failed to initialize video capture plug in
I just read your posting, and I am having the same problem. I try to capture, and it says "failed to initialize the video capture plug in. Another program may be using it or the file has been moved. Failed to open the driver." (this is also after months of using VS with no troubles)
did you make any progress with your issue? I would appreciate any advice you could give me.
thanks! Jenny Weisberg, Jerusalem, Israel

Failure to initialize capture plug-in : VS10
Jenny
Managed to find a resolution to this - for me anyway - last week.
Basically I changed the Capture Plug In under Tools to the Ulead DirectShow capture Plug-in. I have to render the files from avi format anyway as I find it better to edit in avi. When the avi is just as I want I render using the 'Same Project Properties' option - These properties are set have set for DVD-PAL compliant MPEGs. They have to be compatable with the DVD menus (having found on earlier projects that menus can cause a whole new set of problems!
The one golden rule I have learned about VS is that you must ALWAYS get your Project Properties correct at the start (to avoid horrendous render times) and constantly check that they are correct before you reach the Share (burn) DVD stage.
Hope this helps - but sorry that I didn't post earlier.
PS I'm still sure that the Adaptec Plug-in was there when Ifirst started using VS 10 a year or so ago.
