MediaStudio ? where did you read about that - firstly it is an end of life product - there will be no updates and no new versions.pmedia wrote:Have'nt seen much to be impressed with this version - Yet!

If however you mean Corel Media One and also Painter Essentials 3
When you purchase a copy you are given free downloads of the other two.
Don't overlook another not so obvious freebie - Cool360 - which can still be purchased as a separate item - is now built into Photo Impact X3.
So in addition to getting PhotoImpact X3 you get 3 other programs thrown in FREE.
Regarding content... I only have full versions but it is well known that most 30 day free trials do not include all of the templates. You are given samples of what to expect so that you can evaluate the interface and how well it works with your particular system.

PI X3
I've been with PI since around version 4. Am in the process of trying the nex "X3" version (a very Corel title) and I have to say I'm not all that impressed either. Other then a cool cartoon feature and cloud brush and a slightly recolored interface (still looks all the same to me) and some thrown in modules that might be useful I don't see a big difference. Heck, I still use PI11 on my laptop and PI12 on the desk top and I see little difference there too. PI12 seems to have better noise reduction over PI11 but really it all seems the same and PI X3 seems no different. Deciding if I need the upgrade depends on weither I need the two new features or any of the side programs offered. Guess I'll continue to play and see what I really missed.
I'm impressed with X3, although I'm coming from XL. The new features (the ones from 12 to X3) really aren't that great, but that's always been the PI way (and now the Videostudio way too) to have slow and small changes every version. I'd say miss the next two or three 'upgrades' and when you try X5 or X6, or whatever it's called, you'll feel much more justified in your purchase.
Alternatively, Corel could always make some leaps and bounds with PI and we could all have a reason to upgrade every year!
On a side note- Media One is really bad, Cool360 is good but not essential, and Painter Essentials 3 is really limited (although good if you haven't purchased Artrage or downloaded Artweaver for some strange reason yet), but has some very neat effects which PI lacks. The woodcut is one example of an excellent effect, and if you like it looks it might be worth the purchase alone. A few of the other effects PE3 has are also quite unique, so I'll leave it on my HD for a while...

Well, I tried the embeded Cool 360 and it sucks... I own the stand alone Cool 360 (I think it came bundeled with my PI 10 or PI 11) and used it and Canon Photo Stitch for comparison. The Cool 360 in PI X3 has none of the manual undjust features that the old Cool 360 had. The auto features really lack. But best overall result was the Canon Photo Stitch. So for me, adding Cool 360 as a feature and an incentive to upgrade failed. The only difference I see between version 12 and X3 is they added color to the interface and added two new tools (cloud pen and Cartoon) and a few more templates. If Media One sucks (I'll be honest, I actually liked the features in Ulead Photo Explorer 8.6) then that another reason not to upgrade. Will look into the painter essentials to see what it adds later.

It all depends what you use it for mainly. I like its improved ability to handle RAW images and the possibility to work with 48 bit RGB images. Than again, 48 bit was already possible in PI 12.
Never liked Cool360 and always use CanonPhotoStitch which is excellent.
Luckily, this version also allows other PI versions to be installed alongside. That way I don't miss out on GifAnimator and PhotoExplorer 8.6.
All in all, I agree, if you are not working with digital photos and have no need for RAW support, upgrading from PI 12 means you are buying an expensive Update, not an Upgrade. It does seem to run more stable than PI 12 and perform a few tasks quicker than PI 12 though.
In time, I'm certain already, I will prefer this over PI 12 or any of the older versions.

I am really dissapointed
I was looking foward to new effects and annimation filters, and path/drawing tools which are now over due.
It really looks the same as the demo version of XL which I first used.
Thanks for the extra goodies but what about the core product- Photo Impact?
It is still my favorite program however....

I'm looking for a more stable version of PI 12 to run on my Vista laptop (I use PI 11 on my desktop.) I had to uninstall PI 12 b/c it just wouldn't work under Vista for me (even with the update.)
So... can anyone comment on the stabilty of X3 under Vista?

Re: I am really dissapointed
I don't know how you interpret the word Photo in PhotoImpact? It is my understanding though that photo means just that, photo. In that respect PI 12 is heaps more advanced than PI XL. PI X3 is only a slight improvement on PI 12 but has fixed at least one problem people were having with PI 12, the aligning of grouped objects doesn't cause an out of memorey error anymore.pmedia wrote:I was looking foward to new effects and annimation filters, and path/drawing tools which are now over due.

When it comes to graphic design features the differences are not all that compelling.

New versions of anything often have subtle changes that you don't really notice until you go back to a previous version and suddenly find "something missing"
I noticed that with the change from Windows 95 to Windows 98 and then again from Windows 98 to Windows 98 SE.
Similarly the upgrade from Windows XP to Windows XP SP 2.
At first you wonder what all the fuss is about.
Sometimes changes can be dramatic such as Windows NT4 to Windows 2000
or from Windows ME to Windows XP.
I think that time will tell and if you use PhotoImpact X3 for a few months and then try an earlier version you might suddenly be surprised at "Whats missing."
