the best solution

Post by errepiesse »

hi guys,
why, certains dvd home player doesn't work correctly with masterized dvd with mpeg2 movies worked by studio 11, at same time with dvd bought at store?
Sometimes reads, sometimes not.
Last week i have created the holydays's movie, well: ok the rendering and ok the burning: the dvd works good on the pc, but only the ps2 reads this work. The domestic dvd player on tv didn't recognized the disc..."insert a disk onto player, please"!!!!!!!!!!
Next day, i retried the step: the dvd player works with this dvd, but after 2 mins the same problem.
At least, which options are best to render and burns a dvd with studio 11?
Thanks a lot.

If set-top DVD players won't recognize your burned DVD it is usually because that player is not compatible with your DVD type (-R/+R), some burn errors on your disc, or cheap media.

Make sure your player is rated to play your type disc (player/media compatibility chart). If it is, you may want to try a different brand of DVD (for example, if you use Memorex try Sony or Verbatim).

For best compatibility, .Use Brand Name DVD-R DVD's.

And though not everyone here agrees, a lot of us use a burning speed which is at least half the rated maxium speed of the disc. So if you are using an 18x blank disc, do not burn it at 18x but use 8x or possibly 12x instead.

Home made DVDs are totally different from store-bought commercial DVDs. Those are pressed, not burned. Moreover, they use extremely expensive equipment and processes to ensure their quality.

Ken
Commercial DVDs are pressed, true. The master disc is burnt anyway. If the burning is not proper or if burnt in an incompatible format DVDs players wont read the dic. Honestly I feel these days most of the DVDs players are designed to play a variety of formats.
I feel burning at higher speed , cheap media are the usual culprits. I have had these woes and had them solved by writing at slower speed.

Yes, and I've recently been burning some dvd's at 16X. They seem to be working OK.
This is probably because the dvd-r's are very compatible with the burner.
Usually I burn at 1/2 the speed of the dvd after I know it burns reliably at 4X.
Only been testing 16X because, well, it's FAST.

Hi Roby, I'd agree with other posters that the poor compatibility of your DVD burner with the blank media you're using is the most likely cause of the problem.

Older standalone DVD players sometimes need to see discs with the booktype set to DVD-ROM, as used by commercial pressed discs (eg movie discs) which many more recent burners will automatically do - but the fact that your player was able to read the second disc for at least a couple of minutes should rule that out as a cause.

Perhaps you could let us know what make and model of burner you have, and what blank media you are burning to. If you're trying to use DL discs, they can be far more likely to cause problems than single layer discs.

Burners are cheap, too - so if it does turn out to be a failing or poorly performing DVD writer in your pc, assuming it is a pc rather than a notebook, you should be able to buy a decent replacement for around $35 in the US.

You might also help us to help you by filling in all the pc related info in your forum profile. It'll save you time in the long run.

Questions

Post by 2Dogs »

Hi Roby,

some more questions!

What burning software do you use?

What make and type of DVD discs do you use?

The HP burner will be a re-branded one by another maker, so I'm not sure what the best media choice would be for it, but the LG might work well with Verbatim 16x DVD+R discs. Perhaps you could let us know the model numbers of the burners. The best quality media currently available is made by Taiyo Yuden in Japan, but is generally only available mail order.

If your HP burner is a 640i, which I believe was their first lightscribe capable burner, it's a re-branded BenQ1625, which is quite well regarded. It writes to DVD+R media at up to 16x, but only up to 8x for DVD-R, and only 2.4x for DL media. It probably has a wider range of compatible media than your LG though.

I would say the Verbatim +R discs are a decent choice. My own LG can't write well to Verbatim -R discs. I quite like TDK 16x DVD+R discs that have the "Made in Malaysia" label. These use the Daxon AZ3 media code, whereas the 16x DVD+R ones with a "Made in Taiwan" label use CMC MAG M01, which I find is invariably poor quality and to be avoided. That same code is used by Memorex, Magnavox, HP and many others and usually considered to be third rate.

The best quality writes might be to Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R or DVD+R discs, with the HP burner, if it is a 640i. You'll not find TY discs in local stores, however.

You should make sure that you have the latest firmware for the burners, and there's possibly a "riplock patch" available for the LG which would allow it to read DVD video discs more quickly, useful if you are in the habit of importing any footage from DVD.
