Naming files for later use. Newbie

Post by gillyv »

When I have taken files off my HD Sony they obviously have file names how do I change the file names to define what each clip is. I cannot see what the file is visually. I can see them visually as thumbnails in Ulead window but not before so this makes individual selection hard

If you right click on one of the files, either in My Computer of Windows Explorer, one of the options in the drop-down menu will be "rename". you can then type in the name of your choice.

If you have used any of the files in a Video Studio project, next time you open the project the thumbnails for the files will show as black and white bands, and you will get a message indicating that Video Studio cannot locate the files, and prompting you to re-link them. You can do this by pointing the program to the newly renamed file.

It's always annoyed me that in the library thumbnails of the files, you can only see the first 8 characters of the file name - so you might try to keep your names short.

It is also worth downloading one of many FREE file renaming utilities off the internet. These enable you to rename files en masse rather than one at a time. Here are two but there are several similar available if you search Google.

The Rename
THE Rename is a program designed to help you to rename files and folders en masse with a number of possibilities and options.
This is a freeware program. You can use it in any situation (professional and personal use)

Lupas Rename
Lupas Rename is a FREEWARE program developed to rename a few or a massive number of files with a lot of features
It works on Win95, Win98, WinME, WinNT, Win2K and WinXP.
It is a simple .EXE file and doesn't need any other external libraries.

Thanks for your reponse much appreciated. I have been having more of a play and have realised that I can view my files in Picture Motion Browser. I can see them visually. However I have no idea how to get them into ulead 11.
also it says that I can register other files in here so I thought great I can get all those old video clips from 'My videos" and be able to see them and select them and have them all in one place with the recent HD video I have captured and my stills. But even though I go through the resister process the selected My Videos folder is still not there. Any ideas? :?:

Have worked out that I do not need to rename anything. I copied the files into ulead and they came up as thumbnails. Sorted out the order because for some reason they were all muddled up and yippeee I can see them all.
Even put them in various folders. nothing like a little bi of success to spur you on! thanks for your help though.
