Does all 16bit audio sound the same?

My new camcorder's audio sounds muffled on 12bit and 16bit. My old camcorder sounded much better on 16bit and it was an older cheaper model.

There both panasonic mini dv camcorders. My old one was a Panasonic PV-GS9 and the new one is a Panasonic PV-GS320.

Is this normal. Or could there be a defect?

If both channels sound the same, then it is probably a function of the microphone. Does it sound the same with external microphone(s)?

There isn't a external microphone input.
