Overlapped buffer is full? Error message

Post by CrAzYbRoS »

"An internal error occurred when overlapped buffer is full."

That is the message I am receiving when I try to make my project into a video or audio file.

I have two audio tracks which have only two effects added to them.

What is wrong?

Describe your problem:

When I try to create a Sound File from my project, as soon as the saving gets to the part where the second sound file comes in, it brings up the error message, "An internal error occurred when overlapped buffer is full."

Properties of your source files (format, file size, where did you get it?):

Source files are 13.2mb and 12.5mb .mp3 sound files. One file was recorded with the "What you hear" source and the other was by microphone.

What devices are involved and their mode of connection?:

No devices are involved.

Project Settings (important):

It's just two sound files. One has been sped up to 200%, changed pitch, and reverbed.

Output format (file, DVD, VCD, SVCD):

None of the sound file outputs work, specifically the .wav and .mp3 formats. I've tried them all.

PAL or NTSC:

NTSC

Error Codes (if any):

No codes.

Try Audacity?

Post by 2Dogs »

Hi CrAzY,

it might not solve the particular problem you're having with Video Studio, but if you're doing stuff just with sound files, you might be better of using something like Audacity (freeware) to work on the files, and it of course has much more in the way of available effects and tweaks.

I had read the first post the way you did, 2Dogs, but then I saw that in the second post, he said he was trying to split the audio "from my project", which I read to mean a video project. Not that it helps much.

I have never heard of an 'overlapped buffer' in Video Studio before. A full transcode buffer, yes ... though now I am wondering whether CrAzY has translated 'overlapping' from another language into English, and actually means the transcode buffer... :?:

But I really think we still need more information, including confirmation that we are dealing with a video project from which he is trying to split the audio, or whether it is indeed only an audio project -- in which case I thoroughly agree with you, 2Dogs. Video Studio is a video editor, and not an audio editor...

Anyway, if it is the transcode buffer, that usually only fills when the speed of incoming signals is too fast for the program to process. That should not be the case with audio mp3 signals.

Two things you could try, though, CrAzY, would be (1) don't use mp3 files in Video Studio in the first place -- VS has difficulty with certain mp3 codecs -- the LameMP3 codec in particular. Those need to be converted in an outside audio editor program to .wav format. In other words, if you have used mp3 in a video project and combined it into the video, but are now trying to split it back out, it could be that Video Studio is having difficulty with the mp3 codec you used and is slowing down while it tries to process it. But too much other information is coming in at the same time, so the buffer fills up and processing stops.

(2) The other thing you could try doing would be going to your C:\Documents\[Your Name]\Local Settings\Temp folder and clearing it out of all the files there. You should do this regularly anyway, as you will be surprised at how many temporary files build up there and often cause conflicts with open programs.

Don;t we normally recommend to covert compressedaudio files to .wav files using the totally free "audacity" software?

I recently had the same problem with a project where I used a 5 sec sound clip of a jet taking off that I had amplified, increased play back speed, and also changed the pitch. I removed the effects and the problem was gone.

i have been having this same problem all morning. i am running VS x5 on 64 bit windows 7 HP w 4G RAM. the first time, i saved as .avi and attempted to convert to .swf in xilisoft. first, xilisoft loaded and converted the video completely backwards. (i don't know if that was related to the error at all but when i viewed it prior to loading in xilisoft it looked fine.) now i am trying another program and trying to save as mpeg and it will not create an output file i keep getting the error message. 'an error occurred when the overlap buffer is full.' i had no problems until this morning. the only updates i have done are some downloads through the VS x5 interface--just some titles and transitions. no clue what is going on. i had no problems outputting a file yesterday morning.
file properties:
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo.
some portions of the file are jpegs imported that were created in PS CS4. the rest are just titles created in VS x5

@ warriormom

When I read your post, it looks as if the problem happens when loading the MPEG files that was created using another program, is that correct? When you say "another program" what program are you using?

Also does the same thing happens when you load the original .AVI video?

I realize this is an 'aging' topic, but this issue seems to be a recurring 'generational' problem of some type... I just ran into this - and that was after re-installing VSPx10 Ultimate to solve it "not starting at all" (it would show the splash screen and then just close). Now this error comes along.

I did some basic troubleshooting, so far trying rebooting, running with no background applications, and so on - I even enabled Proxies for all files and tried rendering with those - and the error still occurred.

I then did some experimenting, and it seems I can render to Windows Media Video without the issue popping up, but nothing else. All other output formats result in this error (screenshot of the error attached):
Corel Videostudio x10 Ultimate - error, overlapped buffer full - 2017-04-28.png
Corel Videostudio x10 Ultimate - error, overlapped buffer full - 2017-04-28.png (4.96 KiB) Viewed 14515 times
Because rendering to WMV worked, I wondered if it had something to do with GPU-acceleration (since WMV can be rendered without it), so I then went into the Preferences and disabled all acceleration (GPU-based acceleration) that I could, so that VSPx10 was working 'mainly' on Software rendering. This did not alleviate the issue, as rendering to any format (other than WMV) produced the error again.
So, I mention this again in a post, to show that it still occurs for some users, and in case knowing that WMV can be rendered helps anyone (or the developers).

If anyone has other ideas, or knows how to solve this issue this year (haha) as in, perhaps someone now knows - since it's been around a while - please feel free to share!

Update:
Sorry to 'bump' the Thread again, but I was able to do some more troubleshooting and wanted to share my findings in its' own post...

I was removing elements and trying to render each time I added another element (text, audio, etc) with only the source video files present and nothing 'extra'.
I found that I was able to render without Audio Files or Text used (only video files).
Adding Text (Corel's built-in Titles), I was able to render still.
Adding Audio Files I was no longer able to render.
Audio Files used had Audio Filters and Speed Adjustments on them.
Disabling the Audio Filters but keeping the Speed Adjustments on all Audio Files that utilized them, it rendered!

I could have Speed/Time-Lapse adjustments on the audio files utilized, but NO Audio Filters (Reverb, Remove Noise, etc) - if I added those, it would not Render in anything but WMV format.

So, this is a bit 'early' of a diagnosis, but it appears that the Audio Filters could be related to this issue...

Perhaps this may help others at least get things going - and any developers that may see this 8)

Hi Troy,
Sorry for the delay in replying. I read your post yesterday and scratched my head as to what may have been causing it. You did however proceed correctly in troubleshooting and I commend you for doing so, and really appreciate you posting your finding.

VS is very picky when it comes to audio files. With a video or audio clip in the project go to the Share step, select audio and then the drop-down menu to see the miniscule formats provided. That should tell us that VS plays nicer with WMA or better yet WAV files. I've used Audacity, in fact done so yesterday on a project to convert a file from WAV to MP3, which is another issue due to LAME licensing which Audacity uses. That also may be why Corel does not provide mp3 as an option. I do know that people have reported issues in VS when trying to use mp3 audio files, VS just does not like them.

Could you post if you know, what audio filter, if you are able to narrow it down to just one, or all that you attempted to use? I'll admit that I rarely use them. About the only one I've used is to help remove any buzz or hiss.

Thanks.

Thanks for all that detailed research, Troy. But one thing you didn't tell us was where your audio came from in the first place, and its format (mp3, wav?)

Personally, I have never used the audio filters that come with any version of VS. At most I will adjust the volume up or down. But like Ron I tend to do whatever audio adjustments are necessary in external programs like Audacity. That also applies to voiceovers where I prepare a script and do each element in Audacity (in .wav format), adding any filters necessary there, before exporting the voice file for that element and placing it in the VS timeline. Most of my music comes from SonicFire Pro 6, and again it is already trimmed and filtered before being inserted into VS. Any other music is trimmed and filtered in Audacity.

As Ron has already said, audio has long been one of VS's weakest points, and this has been drawn to Corel's attention time and time again. But I guess they feel that what they provide in this regard is enough, and any more demanding users have third party audio editors to fall back on.

Hi Ron,

No problem at all, I did not expect a quick response or anything, I assumed that since this was somewhat of an obscure issue that noone would perhaps answer.

I continued to test the Audio Filters one-by-one and found there were only three that resulted in his “overlap buffer error” when Rendering:

- Reverb
- Pitch Shift
- Vocal Reduction

Initially, I was using two of these on one file, but after testing, found that these would produce the error, even if used one at a time (with no other filters used).

Now, I had a Speed Adjustment/Time-Lapse setting on the audio files used as well, so I tried taking out the Speed Adjustment (processing it at “100%” speed) – and the error still came up for these filters.

In the end, I tested all twenty Audio Filters separately (inclusive of the NewBlue ones) to find out that when used, none gave errors when Rendering - except for these three… Interesting. Hopefully this will help in finding the source of the issue (I am not a Programmer so I cannot help much past testing End User material, sorry).

Happy to help, when I can!

You’re quite welcome, Ken, happy to help if I can… Good thinking – the audio files were WAV format. Here is a MediaInfo analysis on one of the audio files used:

General
Complete name : G:\samps\[99Sounds] Cinematic Sound Effects FREE\Risers\Generdyn - RISER - 01 - Wave Up .wav
Format : Wave
File size : 3.31 MiB
Duration : 13s 124ms
Overall bit rate mode : Constant
Overall bit rate : 2 117 Kbps
Writing application : FL Studio 11
Comment : Modified by FL Studio 11

Audio
Format : PCM
Format settings, Endianness : Little
Format settings, Sign : Signed
Codec ID : 1
Duration : 13s 124ms
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 2 117 Kbps
Channel(s) : 2 channels
Sampling rate : 44.1 KHz
Bit depth : 24 bits
Stream size : 3.31 MiB (100%)

It is a Free Sample from 99Sounds (I did not alter it in 'Fruity Loops Studio', the sample was distributed from their website that way, I added the filename 'Wave Up' though). You know what? You opened up something there…

I saw in the output from MediaInfo that it was a 24bit-depth sample, so I tried Rendering in VSP with a different version of the same audio file – after converting it to 16bits – and guess what: it worked!
I did not even look at the bit depth of the audio files, previous to this...

After further testing then, here’s what I have found:

Update start (Edit: long explanation removed, trying for a shorter version)

I did some further testing on the audio files, looking at their specific properties.
I found that the files giving this error were in 24bit depth, 96000Hz format.
Just to test it, I converted the audio file to 16bit depth, 44000Hz format (Standard Compact Disc Audio WAVeform format) and it worked!

Here is what I found then, during more testing on the bit depth:

- 16bit audio file = Audio Filters and Speed Adjustment can both be used at the same time
- 24bit audio file = Only one or the other can be used at a time

Both Audio Filter and Speed Adjustment added = Error with 24bit audio file at 96000Hz sample rate

I found that the 24bit depth audio files were also 96000Hz...

Testing 24bit audio files at 44000Hz resulted in NO ERROR = it worked!
when using both an Audio Filter and a Speed Adjustment at the same time.

The error was repeatable however, with a 96kHz 24bit audio source file (having both a 'trouble' Audio Filter (one of those three) and a Speed Adjustment on it).

Although this is not a 'game breaking' issue (I don't mind converting any of my 24bit audio source files that are at 96kHz into 16bit depth versions), this may be an issue for more novice users, who may not know how to do so.

Also, many commercially available Samples (sound source files) are distributed to the customer as 24bit audio files, for higher fidelity.
(Example: I purchased Sample Packs from Sony Creative Software (if I may name retailers) and they came in a bundle as 24bit audio files. Another purchased Pack from another retailer (BigFishAudio) also had the source files being delivered as 24bit sources).
If any of those are at 96kHz (I see that most are at 44kHz anyway...), then it may bring up this issue.

Update end

Interesting… Well, it is exactly as you two experienced gentleman say; VSP can ‘handle’ various audio files and formats, but is a little ‘picky’ on what it uses without issues. Hopefully this information can help to improve it for the future, at least... (I realize too that it may be my machine, or my specific set of hardware, interacting (CPU/Sound/etc) - and also there does not seem to be many 96kHz 24bit audio files floating around in general usage (from what little I have seen, perhaps there are...).

I too have used Audacity in the past - thank you for the reminders you two, that I could just use that to do any ‘pre-processing’ needed (I also purchased Sound Forge, back when it was under Sony’s care; it has since been acquired by MAGIX) - I was just playing around with VSP since upgrading to X10, ‘seeing what it can do’ and had ended up using some filtering. Anyway, hopefully something useful can come out of all of this for others/the future 8)
