Big Problem

Post by pauljoanss »

I have been using MSP8 for several years with no problem.
After not using for several months, I started a new project this week. When creating a video file the program stopped responding after about 30 secs (real time). Tried again and again, it always stopped around the same point. Tried with different clips, always stopped around the same time.
Made more space on C drive, still stopped.
Uninstalled and reinstalled, then would not even start up "video editor has encounted a problem send message to microsoft".
Looked on forum and took note of how to carry out a clean uninstalled. Went thro the process and made no difference, it still fails to even start up.

Please can someone help as I have promised to edit video by end of month.

Regards

Throw a few colour clips on the timeline (no video assets at all), enough for it to take about minute to render. Render it out and let us know if it finishes or fails.

Good luck!

Sounds like you have a serious conflict with some other software. Please think: what did you install since the last time it worked? Could be e.g. any video or audio codec from some other software. I once had a problem like yours rendering and figured out that the guilty one was a little tool for inspecting avi files.
What can you do:
1) if you have some programming knowledge (or have a good frient which has) you can try starting MSP while a debugger is running (or installed to catch exceptions). Then look at the callstack and verifiy to which programm (or company) the modules on the stack belong. This might give you a hint whats wrong.
2) If this is too difficult for you the easiest and shurest way is to reinstall the pc. Install only the absolutly necessary things (e.g. drivers for disk and video card and MSP8). If it does still not work even after this procedure, than you might have a defect hardware.

You could always try partitioning your hard drive and doing a clean XP install on the new partition. Then use this partition only for MSP, creating a dual boot system. This has been covered elsewhere in this form if you need more details.
Are you using the latest service packs?

Without even knowing were you stand with your OS updates, I'll be willing to bet it's an old version of Windows Media Player update. I forget exactly the update number, but, there was a version that played havoc on a few editors in the past. I'd try updating the entire OS and see what happens.

Thanks for quick response from all.
I like the idea of reinstall or dual boot, I suspect trying to get to the real root of the problem could take a lot longer and may not necessarily have a good conclusion.
Dual boot sounds easiest. I have a second drive which is a lot bigger than my C drive and use this to store all my video stuff. Can this be used to install xp and still keep the other files already on this drive safe.
Note I have already tried installing MSP8 onto this second drive without success but I suppose it would still have used C drive for some stuff.

yes, you should be able to install xp to an existing hard drive no problems. Just dont select the format option when you install xp.
