[On the couple of times that's happened, I managed to restore them by shutting down, removing the burner, going thru a boot cycle and then re-installing them.]
I'm going to keep this in mind. I'm going to try tech support one more time because I have a couple of other questions for them and if it's another bust I will probably try the removal that you suggested. Thanks for the tip.

Did you try to burn from "DVD folder" to disk with DVDShrink?

I had troubles similar to yours that I resolved yesterday after a good look to this useful topic.

I have not tried that. Is DVDShrink a separate program? Could you give me more details as to what you did?

DVDShrink

Go to the link above and you'll get all the informations you need. I have an old version, but I think it's pretty much the same.

Since yesterday I have always used it for my DVDs' back-ups. It also works getting data from files on hard-drive (e.g. "DVD folder"), but since yesterday I have never tried this option.

I was desperate too :( . I burnt useless more than 10 dvds  before reading this topic you opened. Hope I'll be helpful for you too.
Thanks a lot to you and to all the guys who posted on it. 8)

DVD Shrink is Freeware

Post by 2Dogs »

If you do wish to use DVD Shrink, the latest version is 3.2.0.15.

It's freeware, so you shouldn't need to pay for it, nor even register with a download site. Therefore I would suggest you download from an alternative, such as this one:

Finale . . . I hope

Well, after hours of chatting and troubleshooting (which did include uninstalling the hardware) with Dell Support, they did decide to replace the burner since it's still under warranty. It seems to be working now, so I'll keep my fingers crossed. Thank you for all of the suggestions!
