VS10+ crashes AFTER I shut it down
Yes I have posted problems with VS10+ crashing 12 months ago and that post resulted in quite a few replies some of which offered possible solutions all of which appeared to have some (small) affect.
I now do my editing logged in using a special (video editing) profile which has the minimum of background processes running.
VS10+ still crashes (Video studio has encountered a problem and needs to shut down....) but not very often ...
BUT ....
it sometimes crashes AFTER I EXIT VS (and the VS screen has closed and the Windows desktop screen is displayed). In fact tonight I closed VS10 then SWITCHED user (to my 'normal' login). When I was in my normal profile login I noticed slowness and also that the drive (activity) light was flashing continuously (as it always does just before VS10 crashes). I then SWITCHED user back to my video editing login and when the (Windows) Desktop screen appeared so did the "Videostudio has encountered".
I am hoping that one of the learned, expert or technical readers may have an answer to this. Once again note that just before VS10 crashes the disk drive light "goes crazy" (flashes continuously) for 5 - 10 seconds.
Please note that I have ALL the latest (software) drivers (for video, onboard sound, etc etc installed). I also keep my drives defragmented regularly.

John -- have you checked in Task Manager *after* you receive the error message. I have found that with such messages, it usually indicates that though you think you have closed the program, for some reason it continues to operate in the background, and you have to manually close it down in the Processes area of Task Manager. Look for vstudio.exe, of course, and terminate it.

No other apps give me any trouble.
I DO notice though that when I PLAY a sound file (MP3) with Windows Media Player after it plays 16 seconds (ALWAYS at 16 seconds) the picture displayed in the media player window freezes and the mouse doesn't work for exactly 8 seconds (always 8 seconds) and then I regain mouse control and the picture starts to display again. This phenonema does NOT happen on my second slower PC. Once again I have all the latest drivers installed. Don't know if this helps sort out my problem. Maybe I will swap the video card from the slower PC and see if the problems goes away.
I noticed last night that while I had a project loaded (containing maybe 100 different short clips with a total length of around 13 minutes) and I was 'loading' clips into a library (selecting maybe 200 different short avi files from a folder - to create thumbnails) VS10+ crashed. I restarted VS10+ DIDN'T load the project and continued to load the remaining (150+) clips into that library and it didn't crash. Maybe co-incidental.

John, I have this happen to me once in a while and, when I re-open VS, it asks me if I want to recover the project. I must confess that I have never explored why this might be happening, as it doesn't affect my project because I obviously save it before shutting down VS.
I know this doesn't help you, but I pretty much just write it off as "one of those computer/VS things".

I had exactly the same problem in VS10+. I upgraded to VS11+ (not for that reason) and still encounter this strange crash almost, but not every, every time I exit the program.
By the way, I'm editing HD shot on a Sony HDR-HC7, and all my projects thus far are small - around 5 minutes or so tops.
It doesn't cause any problems really but it's a bit... untidy. Windows asks me if I want to tell Microsoft and I always do, in the hope that Corel / Ulead will get round to dealing with it.

I have the same problem with VS 11+. Never had this problem with any of the other VS versions.
I have not figured out what causes this and was hoping to find help with it here - I still may get it here as this forum is awesome - but as a sort of workaround, when I make my last save before closing down, I select "New Project" and clear the timeline. Then I close the program and voila, no error message and no "Do you want to recover the last program" the next time I open VS.
I suppose this error could have many potential solutions as opposed to a one size fits all solution. This is not answering the OPs query; but I thought it might help until this error gets sorted out.

I think...and not know without any certainty but I think it has something to do with the VS pre loader that starts up automatically when windows starts.
I had this problem a couple of times but since removing the VS preloader from start up I haven't had this problem. (but i have done a few other things so not sure if this was it)

You could be on to something there. And I don't think it is unrelated to my suggestion to John above to always, after receiving such an error message, to check in Task Manager > Processes, to termination any 'ghost' version of VS which might still be running, even though you think you have closed it.

I disabled the VS preloader months ago but still have the problem.
I have been doing some 'research' in the Videostudio forum by doing a search on "swap file" (don't ask me why I chose to search on that as I don't know either). Anyway I found a post which suggested that crashing may be caused by a processor not having enough 'grunt' and/or a swap file not large enough and (for VS11) the writer suggested a MINIMUM of 1024 and a MAXIMUM of 4096.
I had mine set at 768 for both min and max (I had done this ages ago in response to something I read about swap files becoming fragmented and basing the swap file size to 1.5 times the installed ram).
Well I can't say that it solved the problem yet as I only did the change a few hours ago HOWEVER what do some of the other readers of this post think?
BY the way should a swap file be created for every hard drive partition or only for the C: drive?

Page/Swap files Virtual memory
sorry about that, did not check it out before posting but check out the following Ken
VIRTUAL MEMORY
VM is created using a swapfile or paging file..When the OS has enough memory it
does not usually use VM.If thr OS runs out of memory it will page at least the recently
used date in the memory to the hard drives swapfile. This will free up some memory for your application..
( OK ..that is far as I can get.rather than type the rest of it out I have tried to copy from a doc that I scanned into word a then paste it here... need some help please)If not I will have to wait for a 4owpm typist)

Thanks Ken,
Does that mean there will be less paging (of VM) with 1GB ram than 512MB?
One thing I could never fathom is why it is suggested increasing the paging file size if you have more memory. I would have thought that you would need a smaller paging file if you have more ram.
I can understand why a PC runs faster with more ram as (hard) ram is faster than virtual ram.
