How to edit with a dual core processor

Post by nbninja8 »

When looking for a new computer I looked at AMD processors and Intel. Ulead says enjoy with Intel Core 2 Duo. But I'm editing on the new computer with a Dual Core Intel Processor now and the CPU usage only goes to up to about 54%. This makes me think that its not really using the 2nd core.

The speed is a bunch faster, but I'm editing some files with lots of croma keys and it plays them sluggishly.

Is there a way to unlock the extra core, or is ulead not compatible with it?

Thanks :D

There are no settings to tweak if that is what you are looking for.
whilst working with your computer simply bring up the task manager and you can see how both processors are being used.

I commonly see about 75% average cpu usage on my C2D laptop when rendering DV avi to mpeg-2. The percentage will vary according to what you're doing. It's unrealistic to expect to see both cores running at 100%, it just doesn't work that way most of the time. Bear in mind that even if you saw each core at 50%, it would more than likely be rendering the files faster than an equivalently clocked single core cpu running at 100%.

Applying filters can change the percentage cpu usage too. If you apply several filters, you can slow even the fastest pc to a crawl, with rendering taking several times as long. If you're having a problem with preview playback, you could set it for "instant playback" rather than "best". The preview quality settings have no effect on the quality of your rendered output. Of course you might be using HD footage, in which case using Smart Proxy helps playback.

Just be sure to apply all the latest updates and patches. You can be sure that if Corel/Ulead figure out a way of improving cpu usage, they'll issue a patch.

@Steve - 75 processes!!! Tut tut!

Hey thanks! I'll keep that in mind. So both cores are working just not both at 100% because thats rare. Okay. :)

Just think of it this way: if both cores were working at 100% -- let alone only for Video Studio -- they would not be able to devote anything much to keeping the other background essential processes and services required by your computer, running. And the whole thing would possibly quickly fall over and the computer would hang or give you the dreaded blue screen of death!

Yeah I know, Toshiba have put all sorts of crap in the start up stuff.
I got rid of some of it. I have set up a Video Editor User Account which uses less resources - it is a pity that we cannot create a hardware profile in Vista like we can in XP. I did quite a bit of research - especially amongst the gamers forums, it is a big bone of discontent between gamers and microsoft that they have prevented these from being created with Vista.

Sorry to contradict you but I have a C2D and when I use Nero recode, both cores are at 100% all the time, no blue screen no hang and I can use another application in the mean time if I lower the priority of Nero. Try it if you wish, it is impressive. I can recode an entire DVD9 to DVD5 in 11 minutes on my 2.66GHz. I wish rendering with Ulead would utilize both cores like that.

Thanks for the info. I would like to try that myself, but don't have any dual layer DVDs that are not copy protected, and Recode won't work on copy protected ones... But I will see what it can do with a non-protected single layer one...

You can try to recode a DVD5 to a miniDVD just for a try. (I recode from a DVD folder on my HDD BTW)
