How to save video clips to hard drive?

Post by dpriest »

I have VS11 Plus. When I open a video clip and then cut it etc. in the timeline, I then copy and paste it in the video library. Is there a way to then save that cut clip on the hard drive?

Thanks in advance.

One way, after you drag the clip to the library, open a new project, then drag the clip from the library to the new project and save, case closed.

That saves it as a.vsp file. Is there a way to save it as its original video format such as an mpeg or avi file?

I am afraid that is beyond my expertise. Sorry I can't help you there.

There are a few things you have to understand first.
  • 1. When you edit a clip using any NLE, not only Ulead's VS, your source file remains intact. No editing will have an effect on your original file.
    2. When you save a project, the resultant vsp file is not a video file at all, it's a simple text file which tells VS where your source file resides and what you did with it.
    3. The only way to get a video file which reflects the editing steps taken is to go to the "Share" step in VS and create a new video file. There you can determine what the new file format should be.

There is also the, now almost forgotten (it seems) step of making your cuts, then highlighting the remaining cut clip in the timeline, and going to Clip > Save Trimmed Video. This creates a new, real clip of the edited video and an icon with a subsidiary name to the original clip appears in the library pane. I usually then delete the edited 'virtual' clip from the timeline, and drag and drop the new real one. And of course the new clip will also exist in your Working Directory to do with as you will!

I guess you can't save trimmed clips if you are dealing with .m2ts files? The menu item is grayed out if I have a .m2ts file open, but is available if I have a different type file format open.

I guess we'll have to leave that to members who use .m2ts files to confirm or comment upon. I don't use them, so can't comment, I am afraid...
