Missing program file - vstudio.exe

Post by TimRom62 »

A few days ago, I turned on my computer to find generic icons where my vstudio.exe shortcuts were (desktop, quickstart, etc.). When clicked, the search for missing files pops up, but the program file could not be found. I have uninstalled it twice now, but after a day, only the vstudio.exe file is missing. It is not in the trash. I even tried to make it a "Read only" the last time I installed it. Can anyone identify the culprit (virus, worm, etc.) that is know for this? Any suggestions for protecting my installation?

Hi Tim,

you haven't been mean to your wife over the holidays, have you?

You said that you uninstalled twice - did you actually mean that you had to re-install VS twice?

If so, when you re-installed, did the program work OK?

Are you sure that vstudio.exe is actually missing? Have you searched for the file when the problem arises? It could be that just your shortcut is being corrupted. This could easily be verified by starting the program from the link in the "start>all programs" menu or double clicking on vstudio.exe wherever it is - usually C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio 11.

If it is actually only the vstudio.exe file which is somehow being removed, it would be worth making a copy of the file onto removable media and checking to see if restoring the file restores the program to full functionality next time the problem arises. I can't think of any virus that would hit on just one particular .exe file. On my system, vstudio.exe is 3,009KB.

I trust you have up to date anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall programs on the pc. Trouble is, if anything gets past them, it can be hard for them to pick anything up. It might be worth doing a scan from a clean boot into dos using a suitable utility CD.

Good suggestion on the flash drive copy...I'll try that. The first time it happened I had both version 9 and version 11 installed (both licensed copies). I reinstalled only 11, but the file became missing shortly after. The second time I de- and re-installed the 11 (and the bonus software), but again the program file vanished and cannont be found anywhere, even on the backup external harddrive.

vstudio.exe

Post by brianfrecknall »

I just had the same problem with the vstudio.exe link disappearing. I've uninstalled and reinstalled. Switch computer off and back on again. Repeated that whole exercise again and still my desktop icon cannot find vstudio.exe nor does going the 'start, all programs...' route. I've searched my entire computer for vstudio.exe and it cannot be found. Any ideas please??

Is this a trial version? Did you upgrade from a trial version? Just thinking that it may be some kind of trial expiration or something. :?

No Its the full version of 11.5Plus, as purchased from PCWorld! It's worked fine since Christmas 07 but I went to use it yesterday and I could not use the SmartSound editing panel which previously had been working. I discovered this when I loaded a file I'd worked on and finalised earlier this year, but decided to have another look at it. I'd used one of the preinstalled music clips, which has an original running time of 1m 37 secs or similar. On my previously finalised film I'd used this clip and stretched it to over 2 minutes, using the SmartSound Panel. However, looking at the film again yesterday it wouldn't play this clip. I delete the audio clip from the Audio timeline and reinserted it, but on trying to use the Smart Sound Panel discovered all the options I needed to stretch it were greyed out. I ran the program uninstall which comes with the disc, but when I went to reinstall it again all it would offer me was 'repair' or 'uninstall'. The Corel site gives details of manual uninstallation procedures so I followed those and then reinstalled the program. That's the point where vstudio.exe disappeared from my life. I've just done a system restore back to before doing all this and this time, when I clicked the Launch Icon I got a message 'completing installation' after a few minutes I got an error message - an internal error occurred (Error Code-%s) - so I'm just thinking about trying another uninstall and reinstall from the Ulead disc. The Corel Manual Uninstall instructions included several changes to regedit which I think may have 'disturbed' things.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble.

From what you write, it sounds to me that VS may have been unable to find the original Smartsound clip - which could have caused all the options to be greyed out. Rather than uninstalling SmartSound at that point, it might have been better to have searched for the clip.

From that point, it sounds like you may have manged to upset something in the registry, and your best course of action will probably be a re-install of VS.

You have to bear in mind that there are very few programs that truly uninstall cleanly - almost all programs leave orphaned entries in the registry and other leftovers. If I need to uninstall a program fully, I load an image of my pc made prior to loading that program. Otherwise, I have a number of registry cleaning utilities, but these have to be used with great caution as you can easily upset other things. When I run them on friends' pc's, I generally find several hundred orphaned entries.

Thanks for your sympathy - it's much appreciated after awhole day trying to sort this out when I've better things to do!

The 'missing' SmartSound clip was still on my system - if I double clicked it's icon it played through RealPlayer for the full 1 minute 37 sec. Hence the reason for the reinstall on the basis that maybe the SmartSound software had become corrupted in some way.

I realise uninstall programs are next to useless at times - hence the reason for following Corel's own Manual uninstall procedure. So to recap:

1 Having followed Corel's Manual uninstall a full reinstall doesn't work because (presumably) one of the files in their regedit instruction should not be delete contrary to their instruction.
2. Having restored back to before starting the series of uninstall/reinstalls, all appears normal until you click the launch icon at which point it says completing installation and then comes up with the previously mentioned internal error code %s.

In my previous post I said I was about to attempt the uninstall and reinstall again from the discs - the uninstall (as before and as you mentioned) did not completely uninstall and therefore I could not do a reinstall, only a repair - having done this I'm back to square one with the 'vstudio.exe' missing file message!

I think I need to go into serious discussion with Corel!!!

Thanks for the tip about loading an image of your pc prior to loading a program - I hadn't thought about doing that. I'll have to give that one some thought though!

I'm always fearful of playing with regedit for precisely the reasons you say.

In the meantime I'm going to restore back to yesterday's point again and then try an uninstall and reinstall from disc (when I did the restore mentioned in 2 above I did not at that point uninstall and reinstall, I tried the already reinstalled version) - but not until I've had a large Gin and Tonic!!!
