Where'd The Audio Go?

Post by boxy »

Sorry to start the new year off on a bad foot.....

I have made a few DVDs with menu, chapters, etc. and there hasn't been any problem.

Today I simply wanted to place an edited video file on a disc. Very easy. But there's no audio on the finished disc. I thought it may have been a bad disc so I tried it with another new one and again, no audio.

The audio was presnt in the preview before I clicked 'next' to the burn stage.

Any ideas why it's disappearing?

In the meantime, I will make one with chapters and see if it comes out okay.

Would you like to give us just the tiniest hint as to where the video came from, what its format (especially the audio part of it) was, how it was captured and what version of VS you are using (including any SE letters that might be in the title). Without such information, I would be doing nothing more than guessing. But my first guess would be that you have a camera which uses Dolby audio for its sound, and you have an SE version of Video Studio. SE versions cannot process Dolby for licensing reasons...

Thanks for your reply, Mr. Berry.

The video file is one I created using VS11+.

The video and audio is all original stuff I recorded.

I have had success with this program creating discs.

After the 'no audio' problem I tried creating a disc (same file) with chapters and when it reached the burn stage the disc spun for an eternity without any progress. Obviously something was wrong. I had to shut the computer off to stop it spinning and remove it from the drive.

My next test was to use the same file with Windows DVD Maker and it worked file, so it's not the file, burner or the computer. Must be a glitch that's just developed in the program.

Maybe some of the temporary burn files are causing this problem? I will delete them and try again.

If that doesn't do the trick I will then uninstall/reinstall the program.

As far as what version I have, I looked all around the box, the manual, and the program and all I can see is VS11+. The date on the manual is March 2007.

******** UPDATE!

I deleted the temporary burn files. I also installed the patch and created a disc with chapters. Everything seems to be back to normal, although I have not tried a straight non-chaptered burn. Hopefully there won't be a problem there.

What caused the trouble? Not sure but the problem has been solved.

So, for now, all is well!

Hi there - I have experienced the same issue that you have. In my case i created a project, saved as video file (DVD PAL 4.3), then burnt to disk in DVD Video format - all worked 100% with playback including both video and audio. I then added further material to the project, and repeated the process ( i.e. resaved as video file, and reburnt to disk) using the same settings. On this and subsequent attempts there is no audio burnt to the disk. As in your case, the audio does play in the preview- just doesn't make it to the disk.
When viewing the contents of the disk i can see that the audio folder is empty.
I have since reburned an old project via the same means, and this has worked fine - so seems to be related to that project somehow.

Can you tell me - which were the temp burn files that you deleted - i would like to try the same thing to see if it resolves my problem

Thanks

I think the idea is that you go to your Temp folder and empty it of everything it will let you delete. You will probably be amazed at the amount of stuff in there. It is a hidden folder so you will need to be sure you have adjusted your Folder settings so all are visible.

In XP, you will find it in C:\Documents and Settings\[Your Name]\Local Settings\Temp. In Vista, it is in C:\Users\[Your Name]\App Data\Local\Temp.

Don't be disturbed if a small number of files there can't be deleted as they are being used by an open application. But the VS temp files are unlikely to fall into this category.

It's also a good idea to clean out the Temp folder on a regular basis (I do it a couple of times a week at the very least). Apart from anything else, it will free up space, and potentially avoid conflicts with newer files in a variety of programs.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for your quick reply. I have looked in that location and there is a truckload of files - but nothing in the ULEAD directories thatI can see. (There is a ULEAD folder in that location)

There are also ULEAD files in the following location - and I wonder if I should also be deleting these.

C:\Documents and Settings\[Your Name]\My Documents\Ulead Video Studio\11.0\

There are further subfolders here including Audio Temp, DMF_Temp etc. I wonder if there are the burn temp files being referred to here.

I have deleted the temp files as you suggest and will try to burn the project again.

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Ken,

I have deleted all files in the location you suggested and this has made no difference. I hev reburnt the project with the same result.

I do notice that the working folder used when burning is not in this location, but is in the C:\Documents and Settings\[Your Name]\My Documents\Ulead Video Studio\11.0\ location mentioned above.

Do you know if these are also "temporary" files - I would hate to delete somethinkg I shouldn't. Given their location under "My Documents" I suspect they are working files and could probably be removed - but I am not sure.

Thanks

I would leave the working folder alone unless and until you know you have no projects pending. Otherwise, you will indeed delete some active files (project and video) need for the current or other projects. The burning working folder should be in the same one as the main working folder, by the way, unless you have consciously selected another one.

By the way, the Audio_TS folder on a burnt DVD is nearly always empty (except for certain audio DVDs). That is the way it is, so don't read anything into that.

I am beginning to wonder, though, whether in re-doing your original project, you have accidentally set the audio to Mute. You might want to check that in Edit mode. In alomost the dead centre of the VS screen, to the right of the preview screen, is the digital clock and volume contol. To the right of that is the mute button (crossed-out speaker). If it is showing as red with your problem project open, then the audio is muted.
