Hi. Keep getting "unable to open capture graph" error using sony DCR-TRV238E and VS11+. Strange as camera has worked before with this version of VS (and previous versions). Have installed latest directX and patches from ulead web site. Also tried on my sons laptop but brings up same error. Any help appreciated.
Thanks Roger

Welcome to the forums,
First to confirm, your model of camcorder is a Hi-8 analog correct? If so this is not surprising that VS11 is throwing this error. It should capture, especially since you installed the patch for VS11.
Corel, or (rather Intervideo prior to being acquired by Corel) changed the capture plug-in when they developed VS11. When first released VS 11 would not capture analog, would not allow pass-through analog to digital conversion. The patch was to correct it, however still fails when placing an analog tape in a Digital-8 camcorder.
I've read one possible solution on the boards, which sounds a little ridiculous, but worked. Launch VS, go to the Capture step, then turn on your camcorder, and place it in the Playback (VTR) mode.
I would attempt that a few times to see if VS finally will recognize the camcorder and allow you to use it.
Absent of that, I would say that if you have an earlier version, say VS10, I would use that to capture, and VS11 to edit. Just in the capture settings de-select the option to Capture to Library.

Ron and I are among quite a few users who found, with the original VS11/11+, that it would not capture from (a) a mini DV camera being used as a passthrough device connecting an analogue-source device (camera or VCR) to your computer via Firewire; (b) an external analogue capture device which uses a DV connection; or (c) a Digital 8 camera (such as Ron and I and you all have) whether it be used as a passthrough device or when it was actually playing an analogue 8mm or Hi8 tape for conversion to digital via Firewire. No one who reported in on this issue could use it successfully, period, and if you could, that would have been a first.
The 6 November patch was supposed to have corrected this fault, which as Ron has said, is related to the new IVI capture plug-in which InterVideo/Corel in their 'wisdom'
substituted for the perfectly functioning previous capture plug-ins...
And in fact it mostly did. It fixed situations (a) and (b) above, but only half of (c). So in fact you can use a Digital 8 now as a passthrough device, but still not to actually play analogue 8 or Hi8 tapes back directly via Firewire. So if, like me, you are in that situation, there is still no solution apart from (like me) going back to an XP computer on which I still have VS10 installed, and using that for the captures. Annoying but manageable.
