16:9 Problems with video
Hey everyone, Why are my videos that are filmed in 16:9 ratio and edited in 16:9 ratio coming out looking NOT 16:9 in ULEAD V11. They are long on the screen but not FILLING up the whole length, there still stuck inside that letter box , thats as far as they go. When i bought a widescreen, I thought that the video would use the whole WIDESCREEN, does it have anything to do with Digital or analog . My old dell monitor showed everything the way i would want it, now i get an ACER LCD and all my movies are now tiny and not using my full screen. Something just does not make sense to me. Is it Ulead , is it my video players (VLC) is it me, or is it this monitor. My main problem is when i finish my movies and burn them they look tiny on my TV not full and amazing like they were. I have been using ULEAD for a yr now, should I look else where or hold up for a miracle.. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP, i cant make movies now and that is my life.

It seems to be a setting on your ACER...
What video camera are you using?
What are your project settings?
When you burn...what settings are you selecting.
With your ACER monitor, is this a PC monitor or TV? have you installed the latest drivers.
What are your display settings from within Windows?
We have to figure out why it displays well on a DELL 16:9 Monitor and not the same on the ACER monitor. It seems to me a setting in the ACER monitor.
Can you play the DVD you burnt on a 4:3 monitor and tell me what you see?

I figured it out, I went a week killing myself with this. All it was was my resolution. I dont understand it but when i had my resolution at 1400:900all (and i mean all) of my videos were horrible. I dropped it down a few notches and still the same. So eventually i brought it up one step at a time and it was set one SET to high. Thank you guys for answering though......

I find that with all my LCD monitors (and I have 5), I set the resolution to its highest setting -- which is usually its 'native' setting anyway for best viewing -- and find I have no trouble at all... And with Vista, of course, it is very simple indeed to change the size of desktop icons so they are still easily viewable at a high resolution...

similar problem but with my tv
I have a similar problem when I burn a dvd with the aspect ratio set at 16.9. The dvd plays in my set top dvd player fine except it does not fill the entire length of my tv screen. I am using visual studio 11 plus.
This is my first time using visual studio so any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I suspect your playback problem might be a DVD player configuration issue. You should check the aspect ratio settings in its setup menu.
With the advent of widescreen LCD TV's, I see distorted video everywhere, especially in bars and other public places. I think even some broadcasters may be getting sloppy.

Thanks for the reply 2Dogs.
I did do some playing around last night according to your suggestion. I did change the aspect ratio on 2 different set top dvd players and 2 different tv's. I did see a change in the size of the played video but it did not fill the screen like it should (it is created for 4.3).
This brings up a few more questions.
#1 When I rent a dvd and I am given a choice for wide screen or not I never have a problem with the aspect ratio. In my set top dvd player settings I discovered that 16.9 is set by default. Whenever I have played a dvd in 4.3 it has always worked. How does this work if my player is set for 16.9 and I select 4.3 in the rented dvd menu options?
#2 When I am in Visual Studio editing commercials out of a recorded show, the video in the preview window is also not filling the window (in either 16.9 or 4.3). Is there a setting to change this? Could this be part of my issue with my dvd not filling the screen on my tv?

The find the preview screen in VS 11 never truely in 16:9. You can see this is you set the background colour anything other than black.shorthairtwin wrote:Thanks for the reply 2Dogs.

IN VS11.5+ you can activate more than one overlay track and if you click the Expand timeline button it squashes the preview screen to 16:9-ish...I say "ish" because it's notquie perfect.
on 16:9 projects I have made it appears perfect on a 16:9 plasma and a 4:3 project on the same screen is expanded but a few clicks of the button and I can pillar box it on the widescreen.
So it's definately a setting on the TV that needs to adjust....
Unless you accidently use 4:3 video in a 16:9 project. So it's VERY important to have project settings matching the video properties.

I tried creating another disc. This time I noticed as I opened VisualStudio 11 Plus there is a checkbox for 16:9 in that splash screen you see first (with the 3 choices). I made sure this was unchecked and created a 4:3 disc. This time it did fill the screen like it should.
Aspect Ratio Confusion
My camera works at 16:9 or 4:3. I have tried a number of combinations of camera setting, VS setting on the splash screen, and creating the ratio when I burn the disk. I have a wide screen TV but will want to send DVDs to others without this. From a few of the posts I think the message comes out clearly - you should stick to one setting and be consistent [camera, VS, when I burn]. I think it should be 16:9 but have also ended up with bars across the top and bottom especially when mixed with "old" video which I presume is 4:3.
I should be more scientific and try all combinations .... but would appreciate any feedback on what my standard setting should be and also if there is any "solution" to combining video in both ratios.
Thanks,
Jim

Hi,
I found the following link in AV Forums very useful for explaining how 16:9 and 4:3 work in VS and especially how if affects overlay track
http://uk.geocities.com/trevor.andrew@b ... 9/16_9.htm
and lots of useful stuff on his main page

jlally .... Very good articles. I think I found my problem (at least my problem regarding creation of videos). The article explains that the project inherits 4:3 if there is a 4:3 section in the file. I think that has been happening to me even though the project information states 16:9. Changing the background to yellow helped this discovery. Very useful and also helped me understand where and how I could change the ration up to creating the DVD.
Thanks,
Jim

16:9 or 4:3
Further information .... there was a link at the bottom of one of the articles that helped me a lot
