Video Stuttering

Post by hitek0008 »

Hi

I've been creating HD-DVD projects and burning them to regular DVDs. However, when I play them back, the video and audio stutter. Does anyone know the cause/fix for this problem?

Thank you!!

When the Toshibas players stutter it's because they cannot read the data fast enough from the dvd. If you search on this subject you will find numerous posts on the Toshiba players stuttering when using DVD+R media.
If your using DVD+R try burning to DVD-R dvd's. Make sure they are compatible with your burner. You need a good burn because the dvd's spin pretty fast when playing back HD video.

So use a DVD-R disk.
You may be able to use a DVD+R if you can change the "BookType" to DVD-ROM.

Thank you.

I was wondering if it would work if I burnt to DVD+R DL disks?

I can't predict how they will work on your particular player, but in general your odds are worse with dual-layer disc. Some regular players can't play burned dual-layer discs at all! (All players can play commercial-stamped dual-layer discs.) I've never made an HD disc, but when reading a dual-layer disc on my computer, the 2nd layer is read at slow speed... I'm pretty sure the read-bitrate is too low for HD.

Burning at a slow speed (i.e. 4X) can give you a "cleaner" burn. (The spots burned onto the disc can be slightly blurred at high burn-speeds.)

You may have a bad batch of blanks, or your burner (or player) might not "like" that particular brand.

Or, you may be asking your player to do something that it simply can't do, or something that it can't do well.

Nero CD-DVD Speed (FREE!!!) can help determine if you have a bad burn or a bad disc.

I would suggest to burn a dvd-r disk standard single layer dvd first. Burning DL to play on the Toshiba HD-DVD Players is tricky. You need to find the right burner and media combination. It's posted by many on other forums that the Verbatim DL dvd's work the best in the Toshiba's. My own experience with DL playing on the Toshiba HD-Dvd players was hit & miss.

As DVDDoug posted the 2nd layer can have problems. It's been my experience with DL that when the burn is correct I can read both layers fast & without a problem. I cannot tell I'm even reading the 2nd layer on the DL dvd's that are good burns. Not on all DL dvd's though, I have experienced the same as DVDDoug on some DL burns where the 2nd layer cannot be read as fast as the 1st layer.

If you look in the Toshiba's Manual the players do not mention +R media. They only mention DVD-R / DVD-R-DL/DVD-RW dvd's for compatibility.
I have made 2 DL dvd's that playback in my Toshiba HD-DVD player.
I made about 8 DL dvd's that did not playback correctly in the Toshiba HD-DVD player. Yet the DL dvd's that will not playback in the Toshiba HD-DVD players playback fine on the computer.

I have about 12 DL dvd's that playback fine in my Blu-Ray Disk Player burnt as AVCHD Disks.

For the Toshibas HD-DVD players I usually stay with burning DVD-R single sided dvd's or dvd-rw's disks.

For the Blu-Ray Player so far it seems to play almost anything.
