Thumbnails increasing DVD creation time from 1.75 to 5 hours

Post by Handsome Prints »

I've made a few DVD's from .avi files with Ulead VideoStudio in the past, and DVD creation time is usually about the same as the duration of the video clip (e.g. it takes roughly 1h45m to render and burn a 1h45m avi file to DVD). I normally have less than 6 chapters (sometimes none) and when I do have chapters I used text only menus.

This evening I created a DVD with significantly more chapters (about 20) and I used thumbnails for a change (I didn't know these were available before). However instead of taking 1h45m to render and burn my 1h45m avi file to DVD, it took over 5 hours (the convert menu step took forever)!

1. I thought the thumbnails were "static" but I just checked the DVD and I noticed that they were in fact motion thumbnails (no doubt with the default setting of 20 seconds). Could these motion thumbnails have increased the DVD creation time by that much?

2. I notice in VideoStudio that there is an Edit tab for the templates, and when I click on it, I see a "Motion menu" checkbox which seems to be cheked by default (with a 20 second duration for the motion thumbnails). I guess this is how you switch between static/motion thumbnails?

3. I chose a different template for the title menu (05vs_SceB09) than I did for the chapter menu (05vs_SceB05). Would that make a big difference time-wise?

4. Compared to no chapters at all, can someone approximate the amount of additional time added (to the DVD creation time) for text, static, and motion thumbnails? I realize this depends on other factors, but an approximation would be great.

Many thanks in advance for any feedback.

Welcome to the forums,

First it appears as though you are going from the editor straight into the burn module (Share>Create Disc)using your project file (vsp). We recommend to first create a DVD compatible MPEG2 video file in the share step (Share>Create Video File-DVD ). Then clear the timeline. This is easiest done by selecting File>New Project. Now do not place anything in the time-line and go to Share>Create Disc, and insert your DVD MPG2 video files into the time-line of the burn module.

The reason I point the above out, is that in the burn module your project will still need to be converted to DVD MPEG2. Now you're adding building the menus, and multiplexing all at the same time. Very demanding on a PC, and yes it will take at least 1½ times the duration of your video project. This is also dependent on complexity, and your machine.

With motion menus, and thumbnails, and a lot of them, yes it can increase the time dramatically. Each motion thumbnail is in essence a small video. So the burn module needs to convert each one of them. When it has to use non-DVD compliant video for these, it has a lot of work to do. Another reason to convert your project to DVD MPEG2 before opening the burn module.

I don't think anyone can approximate the time it will take your machine, to burn a DVD, because we know absolutely nothing about your system. If you are running other applications (fore or background), housekeeping on your system (disc cleaner, defrag ran regularly and recently).

A Recommended Workflow has been developed to help guide you through the mine-field of video editing, as it pertains to Ulead's VideoStudio Programs. They can be viewed here:
Recommened WorkFlow for VideoStudio

Just a brief example to illustrate why it takes time..

A video clip is like having numerous photos in succession. If you take a bitmap image and convert it to jpeg, using an image editor it only takes a second at most. Now feed that image editor, like a batch conversion of about 10,000 images, which have numerous edits. Going to take some time right? That's what a video editor has to do. For NTSC video which runs at 29.97 frames per second (that's like just shy of 30 pictures per second), multiplied by the duration of your video, 20 minutes, that's about 72,000 pictures that need to be converted.

If the burn module already had the DVD MPEG2 to work with to construct the Menus, the burn time will be reduced, because it will just need to create the smaller version for the thumbnails.

Hi

From VS 10 onwards Smart Menus were introduced. These take some time to create/render.

You have a choice of three types Smart Menu, Text and Thumbnail.
The latter being the old versions VS 9 etc.

By selecting Thumbnails from the Gallery Tab you will reduce render times.
Disable Motion menu and it should get even quicker.

Then give the Text type a go
