I am capturing from a Sony DCR-HC40 DV camera. I would like to display the date on the captured footage in each segment for a few seconds. It displays on the camera screen but does not show up on the captured footage. I am using Microsoft AVI file format in VS10.
I am told a third party program is required to do this. Thanks.
Showing date on captured footage:

If you are using VS just do a text title.
No need to do it with every shot if they are grouped in roughly same time.
If you really need to tell people the day and time then you can do it in many creative ways... eg:
Write down the dates and time of your sections...write them down with a fat marker in a book and film yourself (or someone else) turning the pages then edit them into your masterpiece.
much much nicer looking than ugly looking, burn't in date codes... just my humble opinion

Clevo suggests the best method, just placing a title for a few seconds. However there is such a program that will burn the data from the DV file onto the video.
This program is called DV Date. It will burn the date and time data onto your video. However you will have this displayed throughout the entire video. Not what I'd want to see anyway..

Thanks for your response. I agree that I do not like to see the date and time info throughout the video as in "America's Funniest People". Some real amateurs behind the wheel there. I hate it when that happens.
I began shooting VHS video in 1987, then 8mm video in 1996. Both of these cameras had the option of displaying the date info as the user desired. I usually had this info up for a few seconds at the beginning of each segment. With the captured footage from these cameras, the date thingy is taken care of. Now with the DV camera, I will need to moniter the capture more closely.
Thanks again for your help, I just wondered if I was missing something with my camera setup.
