I could not locate the encoder you describe. I have not actually installed any Panasonic software that came with the camera.

I ran GSpot as you advised, and got one interesting result.

- - ** Problem **
** File Missing: C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\ULEADS~1\MPEG\uleamp3.ax
- - Type DSH
- - Function Other
DSH 4CC PCM
DSH Friendly Name Ulead MP3 Encoder
DSH DirectShow CLSID {53B228EF-E662-4A9A-90A5-CCE40D1E6383}
REG Driver File C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\ULEADS~1\MPEG\uleamp3.ax
REG Merit 0x00100000

Would this contribute.

I also note there were some 288 codecs, which seems a lot. Some are quite redundant. How do I remove those I dont need?

I would say that yes you need that codec. For removing / adding codecs MS has some instructions on their web..

To have that many codecs sounds as though you may have installed some mega codec pack in the past, such as K-Lite. If so, those packs more often than not are a major source of problem in their own right. They are usually thrown together with the focus on quantity rather than quality. No thought is given to the fact that many of the codecs in the pack will conflict with each other, not to mention with other codecs already on your computer.

That is not to say they don't have their uses. I have used them in the past, but I am usually just looking for one specific codec. So I locate that in the pack, tick only it, and install only it, not the whole shebang.

If you have indeed installed such a pack on your computer, the installation program for it is usually listed as a separate program (e.g. K-Lite Mega Codec Pack) in your Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs list... You may want to consider uninstalling it, then installing only those codecs you really think you need...

KLite was installed some time ago, before the upgrade to Vista.

Its not currently installed.

Vidoman, your article was a Windows 98 page, not Vista. I cannot find the same processes under Vista. Can you help here?
