I've recently had problems with WD Drivies.
Started using Hitachi & Seagate.
If you buy a Seagate (which I've had no problems), check out the software that comes with it.
Worked very well on my end.

I tried Acronis and I guess it didn't like the system I tested it with.
I use an alternative and similar program Norton Ghost.
Works just like etech6355 described for Acronis. Just throwing in an alternative product for you to consider.

OK, I found what is causing the lost of all my installed video Codecs: It's the VS11+ but I don't know why. Here is the procedure to loose the codecs:
1-Open VS11+, plug my Canon HV20 on the PC firewire port.
2- Go to capture and capture the video.
3- After the capture, VS11+ asks if you want to change the project settings. Reply yes and that's it. All installed codecs are gone!
One more thing: Windows Media Player always ask for the "capture device" when all I want is to check the codec list. It's strange. Why ask for "capture device" when clicking on technical support information ?
Bottom line: All is great until the Canon HV20 is used to capture a video on VS11+. I used it before to capture with HDVSplit and no codecs were lost.
Here we go again, another 16 hours!

First time I have heard of that happening, and I use that exact procedure all the time. Might have something to do specifically with your camera's interaction, but I doubt it. No one else, though, has ever reported anything similar to my knowledge, so don't hold your breath too long waiting for "more information"...

Yes, I'm aware that this is not a common problem otherwise it would have been reported before. I can add some more info, though:
-I reproduced the problem again. I didn't need to actually capture anything. Just turned the HV20 on, waited for the canon HV20 to appear on the selectable capture devices and that's it. No need to "start capture' either. as soon as the VS11+ recognizes the camera , codecs are history from the WMP list.
-I did a capture with HDVSplit, everything OK.
-I did a capture with Roxio Creator 10. Everything OK.
-Moved capture videos to VS11+. Everything OK.
One last thing: I have very few programs installed on my Vista Ultimate machine. Basicaly , VS11+,Roxio Creator 10 and Adobe Photoshop CS. No games at all . Only codecs I installed were Xvid and Lagarith lossless. Not even Divx this time.
All Windows updates were installed but I tried not installing them before and the problem happened.
Since I actually don't need to use the VS11+ to capture and knowing what causes (but not why) the problem, no more big deal.
Thank you guys for the help, anyway.
