Using Divx convert I can create Divx files. WMP plays the Divx file without problem . GSPOT has Divx as an installed video codec. Something is causing any video codec I installed to not show up on compression lists in several programs. In my case, VS11+ , Virtualdub and WMP.
Codecs are probably not being registered as they should, although I couldn't figure anything wrong with the Windows Register.

Depending on how brave you feel, you could check in the Registry itself to see if there is any reference to DivX. You would need to use Run > regedit. Then when the registry editor opens, select Edit > Find and type in divx, then Find Next (and after that, F3 to continue looking). I am not suggesting you change anything. Far from it. Just wanting to know whether it appears in the registry a number of times...
By the way, have you tried the manual registering method I suggested above?

I have already checked the registry and Divx is mentioned several times. The other Codecs that I installed and don't show up on the program's list are also on the Windows Registry, on the same places as Divx . I have Xvid installed as well, also not showing on the lists.
I am running out of options. Google doesn't show any problem exactly like this and the first time I saw a report that looks like my case was here from the original poster.
Thanks for trying to help.

I re-installed Vista Ultimate , installed all codecs before installing VS11+ and everything is fine now. This time I decided to apply only the very critical Windows updates and didn't update my Nvidia card. That's the only difference between my old and new system. Took me 16 hours and I'm glad that at least the problem was fixed.

I can restore my Dell to its factory Image, so I think I will try that as soon as I can make some copies of the stuff I want to save.sl2008 wrote:I re-installed Vista Ultimate , installed all codecs before installing VS11+ and everything is fine now. This software is worth every penny.
Once you have XP or Vista setup working properly back it up using this product.
When you do have a problem, which since your running windows you WILL eventually have a problem you simply restore the image.
OR, you can restore the image to another harddisk (new or used).
Instead of 16 hours it will be about 1 - 2 hours depending how large your system is. If running a small system like mine it's very fast to restore.
Acronis True Image 11 Home and many other products.

Thanks. If all I need is a backup/restore of the disk image, why would this software be better than the included back-up/restore on Windows Vista ? I am asking this but actually I couldn't make the Vista restore to work. I backed-up my "C" disk , with all my system and some data files , on my "E" disk. When I tried to restore the image , I loaded the Vista restore disk but had no chance to choose any image back-up. The only option was to really restore the whole system to the factory level.
Using the Vista help function it shows a restore procedure that doesn't exist on my system : On the Advanced Boot Options there is no such thing as "Repair your Computer", as suggested by the instructions.
With this Acronis, can I use an external HDD linked through a firewire port ? Do I need the Vista recovery disks ?
Many thanks again.

If your computer can read the firewire disk on bootup I would say yes. You may have to use a USB for an image recovery providing your system bios mounts the usb disk on bootup. With this Acronis, can I use an external HDD linked through a firewire port ? Do I need the Vista recovery disks ?
The thing about that software is it works.
