Star Wars Galaxies Short Film created with VS9

Post by auntisocial »

Awhile back our video "Aces High" won the Sony Online Entertainment/LucasArts Star Wars Galaxies: The Complete Online Adventures Short Film Contest in the Romance category.

It's an old time silent film complete with hero, villain and sweetheart. I have uploaded the video at VEOH, however, black and white does not always translate well to these sites (at least in my experience).

You can find it at VEOH:

or watch a better quality version at our website:

Hope you enjoy!

Wow.... loved it. I wish I knew how to do animations, that was television quality. Thank you for sharing it.

That's an awesome animation. There's a lot of time wrapped up in that. Just curious what all software, animation and video programs were used to produce that?

Thank you for your kind words. I used to play an MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) called "Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided". My videos fall under the "machinima" genre.

After quitting the game I happened upon some videos people had created using in-game footage and became intrigued. I decided it would be fun to create a dance video to "Simply Irresistible" that showed all of my characters, their costumes, etc., and it would also create a keepsake ... something I could remember them by.

I re-upped my accounts, changed them into dancers and did just that! I come from a long line of computer geeks, however, database theory is a long way from working with graphics (something I had no experience with).

This was a lot of fun for me and quickly became a hobby. After my 2nd video I knew I couldn't deal with MovieMaker anymore and purchased VS9. I made several dance videos and then SOE/LA decided to completely change game mechanics (for the 2nd time in a year).

When you look at the videos think of everything ... the paintings, plants, furniture, buildings, instruments, clothing all being made by merchants in the game; the tailors, the architects, the mayors of each player city creating what you see. Architects providing empty builldings and interior decorators coming in to decorate. It was like living in a Star Wars world.

When SOE/LA changed the game (referred to as the NGE) they narrowed things to 9 professions, dumbed the game down and changed it from a world to a game. WoW (World of Warcraft) had hit the stands and SOE/LA decided they wanted a younger demographic.

At the time I only had two combat characters and they both preferred melee (hand-to-hand or hand held weapon) to ranged (guns). They dropped all melee professions except Jedi and my characters were forced to choose a different profession and so one of my characters became a Jedi. (This is leading somewhere, I PROMISE.)

The initial NGE forgot to give these new Jedi any armor, protective clothing of any kind, and our lightsabers couldn't hit anything. They also doubled the combat speed. In light of this situation I created a video, "Darth Velveeta" a hapless respec'd Jedi who is a perfect example of the NGE ... although it was a little exaggerated.

I agree the animations are beautiful. Credit SOE/LA with the beautiful world they gave us to live in for awhile ... the beautiful characters, the dancing and a range of /emotes that leaves all other games in the dust.

I'm fighting with VEOH trying to get my videos up there. You can check them out if you'd like. "For Misha and Ariel" was my 4th video (2nd video with VS9) and my first try at using effects. "Slang" was the first video I played with speed.

By the time I got to "Old Souls" you'll be able to tell I had ideas about what I wanted to convey visually and it just wasn't possible using VS9. I'm thinking of starting again with MSP8.

Anyway, thanks for the warm welcome and I have a lot of reading and learning to do.

Regards,

Aunti

Happy Holidays!

If I were to only watch a few they would be 'Aces High', Darth Velveeta', 'Don't Stop Movin', 'For Misha and Ariel' and 'Old Souls'.
