Video does not fill whole screen???!!!

Post by dpriest »

I have vs11 plus, and spent a long time creating a video project with a very busy timeline. Videostudio crashed so I had to uninstall and reinstall it. After reinstalling it, I am able to open my saved project with everything pretty much the same, except that the video does not fill the full frame of the playback window. Can someone please help with this as I am so close to rendering this project.

Thanks in advance.

What's the Aspect Ratio for the Project Properties? If it was 4:3 it may have reset to a 16:9 (wide-screen) aspect ratio. You reset this in the Project Properties. Also check to see if you have "Fit to screen in overlay track" checked.

First of all, this is an AVI file I am working with. When I went to project properties, I had to switch the video type to MPEG to see the aspect ratio which was set at 4:3. When I switched it to 16:9, the video shrunk even more on the screen. What else can I do???

:?: You don't have to switch to MPEG to see the aspect ratio, just click on the Edit button, then the General tab to see/change the aspect ration for avi.

Can you confirm that your files are not in an overlay track?

All of the videos are in the video track. Text and other effects are in the overlay. I am confused, because when I click edit at the top, the only options are: menu undo, redo, copy, paste, delete. There is no general tab.

I'm sorry. I was referring to the Project Properties box.

Now I'm confused. Text doesn't go in an overlay track, it goes in the title track. And, to have effects in an overlay track, you must have a video clip or pic there. Can you please elaborate?

My mstake,
Titles are in the title track, audio in the audio track, a couple pictures in the overlay track and there was one .avi file in the overlay track as well. But again, before I uninstalled and reinstalled VS, there was no problem with the screen size. And I did move the video file from the overlay track to the video track, but there is no difference.

I can't believe it took me this long to see this...

Read Trevor's tutorial on 16:9. I think it will clear things up. You're system is ok..;)

Thank you,
That did the trick. Just a general question...I have the Panasonic GS500 camcorder and can record at 16:9. Am I better off recording, and making widescreen videos or not? I have a Sony 36" HDTV that has a wide screen. What are your thoughts?

I'd shoot 16:9, since you have a wide-screen TV. The only caveat is if you are doing video for someone that does not have a wide-screen. However their 4:3 TV will letterbox the video, so it's really not an issue.
