HELP! Preview OK But Burned Version Has Lines Through images

Post by AmberJones »

HELP!

i've just created my dvd slideshow and for the past 5 days (and 40+ DVDs later) i just can't seem to get thefinished burned version looking normal. I've tried every setting possible and nothing seems to work. I'm working of Version 8 of Video studio. Do i need to work on a later version to remove this problem?

I've spent hours making this perfect movie to send out to guests of our wedding and I don't know what else to do. its only a 20minute slide show with just a couple of songs and pictures only.

I seem to get these lines in the top half of the image on certain images and others its just this funny flame like image on the top as well.

HELP!!!!!!

Perhaps posting a screen shot would help. Until then, try using RW (Rewritable) discs before you go through your entire supply of blank media. ;)

There are a mixture of sizes and some of them are quite large. The ones that are playing up seem to be the larger sizes (2-3MB). Should i reduce the ones that are playing up to a smaller size? Do you think this will solve the problem?

It certainly wouldn't do any harm. In general, I think you get the best results by having images of somewhat greater resolution than regular DVD size, but it may also depend on how much zooming in you wish to do.

Incidentally, for a slideshow type project such as you describe, using variable bitrate encoding will reduce the size of the resultant DVD compatible mpeg-2 files - either allowing you to fit a longer project onto the disc or enabling you to use the highest available video bitrate together with high bitrate or even uncompressed sound, if the soundtrack quality is important.

I am not sure how close to the top of screen the distortions you mention occurred. But if they are right at the very top of screen, this type of distortion is "normal", or at least common. Depending on the type of TVs the slideshow will be seen on, the distortion should not even appear, because roughly 10% of the entire edges (all four) of your video will not be seen. This is because the shape of traditional CRT TV screens is curved, and a small part of the image will fill the outer curvature as it curls under the frame of the TV. The effect is known as 'over-scan', and VS even has a setting somewhere or other where you can set the 'safe' i.e. viewable area... (Sorry, I am away from home at the moment and don't have VS installed on this computer, so can't tell you exactly how to find this setting... )

You can set the Title Safe area in the burn module, but not in the Editor. In the burn module (Share>Create Disk to get there) bring up the Preferences dialog, go to the Advance tab. There's a spin-box with 10% showing as the default.
