Error...everytime..Please help

Post by glenn71x »

I am losing my mind....
I am trying to burn a project to DVD and every time I get the unspecified error message as soon as the process starts.

I have been able to use the Dv to DVD mode no problem, burns perfectly. When I try to use the full editor or movie wizard though I get unspecified error every time. I have tried everything. I followed the workflow and outputted (is that a word?) my edited project to mpg2 file instead of going directly to burning. Worked fine. When I try to make a disc now from that file I get the error. I tried to burn the project with no menus too. I even tried using Movie Factory 6 to burn the project and I still get the unspecified error. Ugh! I have all the latest drivers installed for video card, chipset, etc. I have no idea what else to try? The program works fine when I do the DV to DVD wizard so it is not a burner issue I guess. It never even gets to the burning stage anyway. It gives the error at 1%. Is this an issue with AThlon x2 processors? Or biostar boards? I dont know what to do! Please help!

Thanks all

What exactly are you doing at that point?

Please tell us your MPEG-2 clip properties and your burn project properties.

What do you mean by my mpg2 properties. I have the mpg file created already. How would I tell you the properties? Where can I look to find that?

A thumbnail of your MPEG-2 should be in your library. Simply right click on it and choose Properties.

You also didn't answer my question of what exactly you are doing "when I try to make a disc from that file".

I open the Video Studio Editor
I goto Tools...Create Disc...DVD
I then click add vido files
Choose my mpeg2 file (3.5 gigs)
Add Chapters ( i just ley auto add chapters based on scenes)
Then just take any standard menu ( ieven tried without using any menus)
Click Burn
Get unspecified error 5:0:0 almost immediately :x
The properties of my mpeg file are:

NTSC DVD
Mpeg2 video, lower field first
109,995 frames
24 bits 720x480 16x9
29.970 frames/sec
Variable bit rate (max 8000)

Dolby Digital Audio
176,168,168 Samples
48,000 Hz 5.1 channels
Layer none
Bit Rate 384 kbps

Thanks for the response....Hoping this can be fixed

OK, your procedure and your clip properties look good. Now, what are your burn properties? On that same window where you add your MPEG-2 file you will see 3 icons in the lower left corner. The middle one is your project settings. Its default settings are:

MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

You need to change those to match your clip, most noticeable the aspect ratio (4:3 to 16:9). That could be your problem.

Hmmm
That wasnt it... All the settings seemed right. It was set for 16x9
The only difference was the audio setting for 256 instead of 384. I changed that but got the unspecified error again. :-(

OK, time for Plan B. Let's forget about your current MPEG-2 file. Try capturing a short bit of footage, or use a clip you might already have (the VS samples would even suffice). Thirty seconds worth is fine. Don't do any editing, just render it to an MPEG-2 file, then follow the procedure to burn and see what happens. If it works your project could be corrupt in some way. This procedure will help sort things out a bit.

Same issue....
I just used a 10 second sample included in the library.
Rendered the mpg2 file
When I went to burn to a dvd...Unspecified error

I'm sorry, I really don't other than trying a reinstallation. Please read the following post for the correct procedure.

The fact that I dont have a C drive wouldnt have any bearing would it? My computer has an E drive as the main drive. When I installed XP on this new system for whatever reason the windows installer named my primary drive the E drive. Just a thought.

Mine is installed on K:\ drive on a 6 drive computer, with the Working folder on drive E:\ but it all works perfectly well. So I don't think it's that.
