Chapters etc

Post by jparnold »

I think that I have been making a rod for my own back (as the saying goes) with videos of my lengthy trips.
I always create a SINGLE project using up to 4 hours of video edited down to around 45 - 50 minutes of finished video. I then render the project and then create a DVD movie adding chapters.
Such a large project takes a long time to load.
I now think that I should create separate projects for say each day of the trip . I will then end up with multiple rendered videos to create a single large DVD movie.
Without doing a trial and going to the trouble of creating and burning a DVD I was wondering if such a DVD would STOP at the end of each of the input rendered movies and return to the menu rather than continuing until the end of the movie (which is what I would want to happen).
I seem to remember a post by Steve or someone showing how chapters work and using multiple separate videos in the final DVD and explaining how using separate video files works in a DVD but cannot find it.
Would someone tell me that using multiple input videos to create a single DVD will play without stopping (at the end of each input file) or not.
Thanks

When you go to Author the DVD, you can tell it what to do at the end of each Title (either go back to the menu, or continue to the next Title).

George is correct.

This summer I did a highlight video for a baseball team. Each game was a separate title and the menu reflected that. In the menu preferences I set it to play all the way thru rather than back to the menu after each game. I figured the players would want to watch it in its entirety the first time, then use the menu to go to the games in which they starred to watch them over again.

Hi John

From the Create Disc Window
Select the ¡¥Cogwheel Icon¡¦ lower left

The navigation options can be seen at the bottom of this window
By default------Auto repeat when disc playback ends¡¦ is selected
Your disc will play forever

Deselect this option and select ¡¥Back to menu¡¦
Will return to menu after each title.

Selecting ¡¥Continue to play next clip¡¦
Will play all video titles returning to the menu at the end of the disc.

This is the option you want.

There will be a slight pause ( a second or so) when starting the next video title.

I simply fade out to black the first title then fade into black the following title. Makes that pause look seemless.

Thanks HEAPS everyone.
I had considered using fade(in) from black and fade (out) to black at the start/end of each separate clip (to keep the breaks seamless) if I could stitch them together but had not "explored" the "cog". Fantastic.

Do most people (editing a long "video") create separate projects of logical breaks (in the finished movie) to keep each project more manageable eg separate projects for each day of a trip or each city visited rather than have a HUGE project of everything. I would like to know. It seems logical to have multiple small projects. Also doing it that way creates automatic "chapters" one for each input video file.
Having smaller projects hopefully might also reduce the number of times VS10+ crashes although I seem to have reduced the incidence by creating a "video editing profile" courtesy of Steve's excellent tutorial - would still love to know why the crashes occur always preceded by VS freezing for a few seconds while disk activity goes "bananas" and the disk activity led flashing like crazy for a few seconds.

Thanks again for the very prompt replies as I was waiting to get answers before proceeding and I have lots of time to edit my last tour (in October) during the Christmas break.

I have just finished a dvd on our trip to the Uk earlier this year. On my main menu page I had 7 titles-- broken down into main areas of interest. I then had chapters in each of these titles breaking it down again. Makes it easy to go straight to a section if needed. To start I did these all as separate videos in the editing section and then rendered each separately before moving to the authoring stage.

I have noticed this pause on my dvd. do you add this fade in in the editing section? With my dvd as stated above I put all my separate clips into the authoring part.Is there a way to fade in and out here?

My understanding is that you place a black solid color at the beginning and the end of each project and add (transition effect) fradein/out between the black solid color and the first clip and also between the last clip and the soild black color. You then have a video which starts displaying a black screen which then fades to the first scene and then at the end the last scene fades to black. If the next video in sequence in the DVD is the same then you should see the last scene of the first video fade to black and then fade (in) the first scene of the second video. This should then look seamless when watching the DVD regardless of if the DVD player pauses as it reads the next file or not.

Hi

Just to add

If the black colour clip is 3 seconds use a X-Fade of 3 seconds.
That will keep the delay to a minimum

I think it depends on the video. Usually my sports highlight videos are just one project. But the baseball one I referred to was a little different. They made the playoffs for the first time in years and I really wanted to show a game-by-game synopsis of the season. I could have done that with one project, but I thought by breaking it down to separate projects the viewer could jump to the game(s) of their choice.

Every year I also do a year in review for our family: vacation, school activities, my son's sports, etc. I also break those down into separate projects. No. 1, because they happen throughout the year it makes it easier to "wrap up" one project when the next might not be done for another couple of months. No. 2, because, again, the viewer may want to jump around and watch what they want.

As John and Trevor have stated, the fades are added at the editing stage.
