VideoStudio 11 Bug Identified!

Post by sabosik44 »

Graphics Card: All-In-Wonder Pro 9800
OS: WinXP Pro SP2
DirectX: Version 9.0c
Graphics Driver: 7.12 (released 12/20/07)

Procedure: Go to VideoStudio Editor, click "capture", click "capture video".

Error in VideoStudio: "Unable to switch to capture mode. Check if your video capture driver is working properly."

Fix: The latest ATI AIW graphics driver is incompatible with VideoStudio 9 and 11. Roll back to a previous version.

Graphics Manufacturer: Has walked me through testing the drivers and graphics card on my computer and verified that it is working perfectly.

Comments: The latest driver works fine in 4 other video capture software products, but not in VideoStudio. Corel support has maintained that if VideoStudio was incompatible with the AIW driver, they would be getting "millions of calls". They are adamant that this is a hardware or environment problem. It is not. It is an incompatibility bug in VideoStudio with the latest AIW drivers. Corel refuses to recognize this, but as soon as they do perhaps their developers would have a patch soon.

I thought I would post this information in case anyone would know a way to keep the latest drivers and get VideoStudio to work. Or in case anyone else is getting frustrated with the same responses I have been getting--at least you know it is happening to other people!

This is true that there are some capture cards that are not compatible with VS. Looking at ATI's website, your video card comes bundled with Pinnacle Studio 8SE, so it will work better with that software editing program.

I noticed that you have DirectX 9c, however is it up to date? The current release is dated 11/2007. If you have not updated it recently you need to do so, VS11 is very picky about this.

VS9 worked perfectly for a long time with my graphics card. However, one day it stopped working and Corel support was never able to understand why (they said it was a hardware or environmental problem).

I discovered on my own that VS9 and VS11 both do not work with the latest graphics drivers. Instead of recognizing this and then saying, "we'll test it and if it's a problem we'll fix it" they keep saying "it's either a hardware problem or an environmental problem" over and over. They won't even consider the possibility that it could be an incompatibility between their software and the graphic card manufacturer's drivers. The Corel support guy was very frustrated and almost yelling at me that it is hardware/environmental. He wouldn't even answer my question, "I'm willing to consider your statement, but if there is a hardware/environment problem, why does capture work perfectly in 4 other capture programs?" No answer--they just keep repeating it's not their problem!

I have Directx version 9.0c which was last updated in November 2007. Directx version 10 is ONLY compatible with Windows Vista. For now I prefer Windows XP (I let everyone else work the bugs out).

Thanks for your response!

They changed the capture plug-in in VS11, to Intervideo's own IVI. The previous versions used the Direct Show or Video For Windows. However Vista does not support those. Even though VS11 is installed on XP, the capture plug-in is still the IVI.

My opinion only is that is where your problem lays. Looking at it from a logical and common sense approach, your card worked with VS9 and does not with VS11. What changed that could affect capturing? The plug-in, which has caused headaches with a little more than just a card compatibility. That was (and still is to some extent) the cause of analog to digital pass-through. They sort of fixed it, however I doubt they will do anything more with it.

Oh my gosh! I can't believe it Vidoman! That is incredible information (and much more than Corel had offered)! I was telling the Corel Support people that something looked different to me and I mentioned the "IVI" driver I saw and asked if that could be the problem. They kept insisting that they haven't seen any problems with it and that if they had they would be recieving "millions of calls"! Then they'd tell me to "format my hard drive", or "call microsoft", or "call my graphics manufacturer".

At least I know that I was on the right track and that they were just deflecting my questions because they didn't know what was wrong and didn't want to tell me that (the age old way of getting out a tech support problem: "it can't be us, it must be you".

It doesn't solve my problem but it makes me feel better knowing that something had changed with the video capture.
