What is a difference between Movie Factory and Video Studio?

Post by d1ms »

Sorry for lame question.

What is a big difference between Movie Factory and Video Studio? They both seems to be able
- import raw vide files
- edit them (add transitions, titles etc)
- write output to some media, like DVD, AVCHD DVD or to a file

why there are two different products? Maybe be because VS 11 have more editing features and MF have more DVD writing features?
or, can I edit movies just with MF or can I create DVD just with VS?

I'm little confused

You got it.

Yes to both.

Many people on this forum use both - VS to edit their movie and MF for the DVD creation. My DVD menus are usually fairly simple, so I usually just use VS.

If you want more control over your editing, go for VS.

If you want more control over your DVD structure, go for MF.

If you want more control over both, go for both.

i see. thank you!

I guess you can make project in VS, save it as some kind of "project file" and then import it to MF? Or you need to create individual clips in VS and then import chapters one-by-one. Sorry again for stupid questions, I guess I just need to download trial MF - don't have time at all...

I assume MF should import project from VS and/or "clips"

It is not at all a dumb question. I was wondering about the same exact thing. Thanks, for speaking up. Keep on asking them good questions! :D

What you would do, typically, is this: You edit your clips in VS, add transitions, titles etc. and, when you are done editing, go to the "Share" step and create a new video file from your edited clips. This new file, it should be in the right format for your target media, ie. mpeg2 for DVD, you then load into a new project in MF and create your DVD from from it.

VS is a great editing program but lousy at authoring. I use dvd workshop for authoring which is the best Ive found. Ive always thought that MF was really the worst of both worlds - it is not very good at editing and although has more authoring capabilities than VS, it is nowhere near the power of dvd workshop.

That completely depends on what you want your menu to do. I would not call the VS authoring lousy, as it fits my needs. The OP should download the trial versions and give them a test drive. If he uses 16:9 video I'm sure he would think that DVD Workshop is lousy too.

addition about AVCHD. It seems like MF6+ handles this format better than VS+. I seem it just do not trying to change original files as much as VS11+ do.

I find it easier to work with AVCHD video in MF6+, AVCHD output.
I have to admit thou that if want to edit your avchd video files directly this may present a problem with any editing program.

In VS11+ with all the patches the project settings you are looking for a located in the "Share -> Create Disk" module. If you go their (select AVCHD disk), and then into the project settings (GEAR Icon -> Customize) they are available. You can also create a custom template with these settings. These features that are in the VS11+ Disk Creation Module are native to MF6+ along with the feature to export the video to your harddisk.
MF6+ is not as good an editor as VS11+ is though.

I've made many AVCHD disks with MF6+ and they play great on the PS3. Love the new avchd format for playing back (not editing of course)

I'm not saying VS11+ wiil not work, I just feel that MF6+ is easier to use for avchd or hd-mpeg2 with Dolby 5.1 directly....

I just don't have time to explain how to do that now and the avc/h264 encodes I get from VS11+ timeline are not as good as MF6+

Video Studio is an editing program and Movie Factory is an authoring program. The fact that VS does *anything* other than edit and MF does *anything* other than author is a bonus. Complaining about such is akin to buying a MiniDV camcorder and complaining that is only has a 2MP camera.
