Can't burn a 8.5 GB DVD+R DL

Post by pbachow »

I have gone through all of the steps, capture, edit, share and been able to get to the burn DVD step. It then processes the MPG file created in edit. A message then comes up that the file may exceed the capacity of the DVD. I know this is not true since I have cut the file size down serveral times. The file size is now about 1/2 the size of the DVD. I have also told the software that I am using an 8.5 GB DVD (bottom left drop down box).

After processing this last step I first get the message about the file size may be to large. I then press try anyway and then after some processing time I get an error message. The RW-DVD drive does light for a few seconds. Then I get a failure message and I have to close the window.

I am not sure why I ever get a file size is to large message. If a file is to large why doesn't the software just have you insert a second DVD when the first is filled? But I don't even get to the stage where it has written anything to my DVD.

I have tried to burn a DVD on your software about 12 times by now. I find the error messages don't give me hardly any clue as to what is wrong or suggestions about how to fix the problem.

Thanks :(

Burning DL

Post by 2Dogs »

Have you successfully burned DL discs from other applications?

In order to simplify the troubleshooting process, you might try using the "suggested workflow" as described in the following link:

http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=20224

Using that workflow, you might first create DVD folders or an ISO file from which to burn your DVD. It would be a simple matter to check the size of the ISO file, to see if that is the cause of the difficulty.

Assuming that the ISO file or DVD folders are within the size limits for a DL disc, however, you could then try burning the disc either with the Ulead burning engine or a third party program.

My own choice would be to burn an ISO file to DVD using the "Create Disc" function in a program called CD DVD Speed, which is part of the Nero toolkit. If you don't have Nero installed, you can download CD DVD Speed free from the Nero site. The great benefit (for me at least) in using it to burn the disc is that, with a suitable DVD burner, such as any Liteon or even a Samsung, you can perform a disc quality scan on the disc, and actually see what speed the disc burned along with the error rates.

Thanks for your suggestions on burning a DL

I had burned 3 songs onto a DVD as a test. It said that it burned but based on your email I decided to test the DVD. I found that no files showed up.

I also created an 8 second clip with Audio to burn and again got the message
"Failed to burn data onto the disc. [534:-2147216291:0]"

It may be that this problem is not with VideoSudio 11Plus.

My next step seems to be to take the computer to a hardware person to have it checked out. I think my burner (LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-851S GS08) is only a 3Xs write speed. Do you suggest any other burner if mine has to be replaced?

Thanks

SATA or IDE?

Aha! Your burner appears to be an 8x unit - i.e. it can burn to single layer discs at up to 8x speed. although it might be described as a "dual" burner, this refers to its ability to write to both DVD+R and DVD-R media. I don't think it can write to DL discs at all, which would certainly explain your problems!

Do try to check it out with the Nero info tool - that will show all of its capabilities.

It's not a bad burner - but a little dated. In fact I would keep it installed in your pc as a "scanning" drive. You should be able to add another optical drive. Your choice of a replacement will depend on your pc - which you haven't told us about. If it's an older system, of the same kind of age as the burner perhaps, you might have to use an IDE burner rather than a SATA unit.

In that case, I would recommend a Pioneer 111 if you can find one, or the more recent 115. Of all my (seven!) burners, my Pioneer 111 is easily the best overall. If you're in the US, you can find a 115 online, at the likes of Newegg.com for less than $36 shipped.

If you do install a fast (16x or greater) IDE burner, you will get better results by using a 64 conductor IDE cable, of the sort commonly used to hook up your IDE hard drives.

If you can use a SATA burner, the Samsung SH-S203B gets good reviews and can be had for about $31 shipped in the US.

I too have had no luck burning to DVD+R DL. My project is 6.1GB. I'm using VS11+ w/updates and have an internal Sony DRU-710A. Last night I waited 5 hours as VS went through all the "Converting the Title" stuff. When it finally came to the point where it should burn, I got the "Failed to burn data onto disk" error message. (I had previously burned the same project to a 4.7 disk with compression.) I too received the "file may exceed the capacity of the DVD" even though the Disk Type on the burn page showed that I had a DL. Following your direction, I made an ISO file of the project. I opened Nero CD/DVD Speed 4.60 but have no clue how to use it. The online manual didn't help at all. Can you?

CD-DVD Speed is a fairly minimal program!

When you open it, make sure that your burner is shown in the box in the middle, near the top of the window. If you have two optical drives, and the wrong one is shown, click on the down arrow and select the DRU-710A. (since Sony units are often re-branded Samsungs and other makes, it may show as another name)

Next click on the "Create Disc" tab. If you have suitable blank media in the drive the information in the "Disc info" section to the right of the main chart should show up.

Set the burn speed in the box just below this. For good quality media, you can burn at the rated speed. For cheap media, burn one or two steps down - e.g. 12x or 8x for 16x cheap discs.

For DL discs, only use Verbatim discs!

Check the "Burn Image" box, and then click on the "Start" button. A folder window should then appear and you should point to your ISO file.

I really like the way that burning a DVD with CD-DVD Speed in this way will give you a graphical representation of the burn speed. It's easy to see if your burner has a problem with a particular disc - for example, on a 16x burn, you may see the burn speed rise up to 16x and then suddenly drop at the end of the disc.

Many burners, such as those by Pioneer and Lite-on, use a burn strategy that continually monitors burn speed and laser power, and you can see regular momentary dips in the burn speed as this process occurs.

Hi deejay

If you Share--Create a Video File of your project the resultant file can be used in Share ¡V Create Disc¡XAdd Video. You would of course create a file using the correct compatible properties. (Pal/Ntsc-DVD).

When you Share Create Disc-Add Video there should be no further rendering of the main file, (no creating Title) The first process being Create Menu.

Nero
I do not use Nero for burning my Iso files but the software provided by Video Studio. (VCD DVD Disc Image Recorder.
Not sure if VS 11 provides this image recorder??????????

OK
Right click the Iso file on your hard drive and select ¡¥Open With¡¦ select Nero.
Nero will insert the file to its Image recorder, ready for burning.

Sorry for delay in responding. Actually didn't get a chance to try these options until last night. Both worked!

2Dogs: The problem with CD/DVD Speed turned out to be my DVD burner. It began having trouble reading the blank discs I inserted and none of the information in DVD Speed was being displayed. Also the start button was greyed out. I was baffled. Bought new HP DVD Writer 1040r. It's working great.

Trevor: Your instructions were simple and worked flawlessly.

Thanks very much! :D
