I have been running MSP7 for about 12-18 months and split by scene has just started behaving weird...
When I do a sply by scene the thumbnails in the media library are wrong.
Some are right other just show the first frame from the file rather than the first frame of the scene
Ever stranger...
If I re-do the splitr by scene on the same file, I get a different set of right and wrong thumbnails
I am running v7.3 on XP Home SP2 - everything was working fine until recently - the only significant changes were a new video card nVidia GF 5500 and a defrag of the (only) disk.
How does MSP7 get its thumb nails and what could interfere with that process???
Any ideas, please? as I am getting a backlog of stuff to edit
Strangely, I also have VS8 on the system and it is now showing the same syptoms???

Hi,
If both VS8 and MSP7 are showing the same issues, it could be shared resources - something the both use or something from the camera.
I' likely just do prudient housekeeping first - defrag discs, see if all the things are in right places, then see if any camera setting has changed.
You might also check your capture CODEC and virtual device - Direct Show?
If the files are long, you might want to use Type 2 DV AVI.

Mike,
Thanks
I have defraged and I have uninstalled and re-installed MSP7 and tried various patches levels, but the problem is consistent
The split by scene problem is happening in VE, on previously captured files, so not sure how the capture camera settings would affect it, but I have checked them any way and they look the same as always
The files are Type 2 DVs
If I do a split by scene in Pinnacle Studio 9 with the same files everythings works ok, so I don't think there is anything wrong with the captured files.
Do you know how MSP7 and VS8 get the thumbnails from the file?
Thanks

Re: Split by Scene has lost its mind
That could be the culprit especially if this problem just cropped up right after you installed it. Even if it isn't from experience I can tell you that you should always do a fresh install of Windows when installing a new video card to avoid conflict and performance issues.howdens wrote: the only significant changes were a new video card nVidia GF 5500 and a defrag of the (only) disk.
Cleared out temps?
Have you tried clearing out your temp files? (the temp files/folders that you have designated in MSP's preferences)

I used Driver Cleaner Pro to remove all of the old video info from the disk and registry before installing the nVidia GF FX 5500
I have also cleared out all of the temporary directories use by MSP7
I have also tried yet another clean install of MSP7 + SP3 again, and now the problem is worse
I am seeing spurious frame in the timeline clips - the same problem every now and then the first frame from the AVI file is replacing a frame in the clip e.g. I put the time line into film strip mode at frame level
and the time line showed....
clip fr 1, clip fr2, FILE fr 1, clip fr 4 - 9, FILE fr 1 x 4, clip fr 14 -15, FILE fr 1, clip fr 17 - 21, etc
Obviously, this is not what is actually in the file!
It seems to be that MSPs frame/field grabber is getting corrupted and it ends up getting the first frame of the AVI rather than the first frame of the clip. Does any one know how MSP7 grabs the fields/frames?
The source file is a DV type 2 PAL
Any futher thoughs? please???

There's always something left somewhere, even if you manually uninstall everthing. I went through this with two cards, not your particular problem but others. I don't know if that's the problem but if it suddenly cropped up after installing the new card it's definitely a good canidate.howdens wrote:I used Driver Cleaner Pro to remove all of the old video info from the disk and registry before installing the nVidia GF FX 5500
