I got PI v11 to work in Vista

Post by texasfrank »

I share in everyone's frustration who has been trying to get PI v11 to work well in Vista. I got lucky and have gotten the program to work after messing with it for a while. Here's what I did. Maybe some of this had no effect but I've gotten most of the program and features to work.

-Go to my computer and set your computer's advanced system properties to "performance" and this will disable many of vista's "enhancements" that I think may cause problems with PI
-Install PI v11 only and no other programs from the disk as they are incompatible with Vista. If the Ulead autodetector installs, manually remove it from your startup folder so it won't launch.
-Update PI using the ulead 11.01 patch, and also update camera raw
-Right click the shortcut to PI and select properties and put a check only in the following boxes: compatibility tab, disable visual themes, and run as administrator
-When you start PI you'll be prompted to give it permission to run

Here are a few bugs I had to work around:
-Open recent files doesn't work so don't try to use it. You can remove if desired using a custom workspace.
-The easy palette doesn't load the libraries so you have to go to my workspace, customize, then easy palette tab. Then put check marks in all the boxes. Note that you'll have to use the drop down list to be able to pick all the sub categories and put checks in all those boxes for each category. After you restart PI the easy palette will work properly!
-For whatever reason I couldn't manually type in a larger text size than 99 but I found a work around. Type some text, then change tools to the pointer, then click on the text as if it were an object, then right click and choose properties, then under the position and size tab type in a different height and then you can make huge text if you desire.
-I found a trick to make the screen capture work in Vista. The capture only works when PI is displayed and is the "focus". Set up and activate the capture feature to capture the entire screen not just the current window and make the destination the workspace. Make PI window as small as possible and put it in the corner of your screen. Open your other program, web browser, etc to something you want to capture, then switch back to PI. Of course the program will be a tiny box in the corner of your screen but nonetheless it will be the focus program and you'll see your other program in the background. Activate the screen capture by pressing the appropriate button combination. You'll then have a full screen capture in PI which you can crop using the crop tool.

Let's hope Corel will continue developing new versions of PI, but if not at least I got PI to work and there isn't a program out that has so many unique features all in one package.

I forgot to mention that after you put a check in the compatibility tab to select Windows XP from the drop down list

Any idea about RAW support? If I double-click a .cr2 file from my Canon 20D, instead of opening the RAW window for me to select the import settings PI simply opens the picture in read-only mode (which is no good).

If I do a File | Open... and browse to the same .cr2 file the RAW window opens up like normal and all is fine.

I can get by with this workaround, but when dealing with large volumes of photos it gets extremely annoying, especially when the photos you're working on are far down the list and every Open requires you to re-scroll to the end of the list. Double-clicking in Explorer is much more convenient.

When I first filled out my profile I only had the XP box (which is getting really old and cranky).

Now, I have a Vista laptop as well. I only visit this forum occasionally and completely forgot about the system profile attached to my username. I suppose I should add the new info, eh?

I would love to make the Vista laptop my "primary" machine, but PI is the one factor holding me back. At this point I use it for most other things. I could use Canon DPP to process my RAW files, but I just don't like the way it works.

FYI, the Vista laptop is a Gateway with a 1.8GHz Core2Duo proc, 2G of RAM, 120G HD, Centrino and the built-in Intel graphics chip, factory loaded with Vista Home Premium. It'll be a year old in the next month or so.

Ah that explains it

 TIP
The biggest drawback with a laptop is the relatively small hard drives they have - users of this Web Board need large amounts of storage space - especially those dealing with Videos. I recently bought a 1 Terabyte Eternal Hard Drive and it works great. They are really affordable now. I got my from a famous PC superstore but you can get them even cheaper if you get one off the internet.
