I have already posted this but I guess in the wrong place. Here is the problem.
Windows Vista Ultimate, NVIDIA 8800 dual monitor.
VS11+ only shows "preview window" and DV Camcorder on Instant Playback Target (File,Preferences). It should show my 2nd monitor as an external device , a samsung 40" LCD linked to the NVIDIA 8800 through DVI.
I can use the 2nd monitor as an extension to my desktop without any problem. It is configured as a dual monitor , not a clone.
Windows Media Center can also use my 2nd monitor and I believe my Windows settings are all OK.
The VS11+ manual mentions "dual head" as a requirement and this is ATI terminology. Does it mean it can't recognize NVIDIA dual monitor ?
Thanks for any help and Merry Christmas for everybody.

There are plenty of others if you simply search "dual and monitor".

It may work for preview, I don't know. I find the preview adequate as it is so never investigated this option.
I would love to be able to move parts of the UI around my monitors, however. This would give me a higher timeline when using multiple tracks.

Now using Adobe Premiere and Photoshop

Thanks. All those posts seem to be related to previous VS versions. I have the most recent and I don't see "dual-head" as an option on FILE/PREFERENCES/INSTANT PLAYBACK like others do. As I sais, "dual-head" is ATI lingo and maybe NVIDIA doesn't support applications controlling secondary monitors. I know that the Vista driver lacks a lot of features compared to the XP version.
It's no big deal but would be nice to have it working.
Thanks , anyway.

VideoStudio Accesses your Video Cards Configuration for Dual-Head Display. You first setup your video card to display video on the secondary monitor as full screen (available on Nvidia and ATI Cards), Not available in Vista, only XP.
If you are using an Nvidia or an ATI with 2 monitors or a HDTV as your 2nd monitor you can set it up when a video is played on the first window it is displayed full screen on the 2nd monitor. This is true for both Nvidia and ATI video cards, but as far as I can see only when using Windows XP, not Vista..
So far I've had not been able to use this feature under Vista, using both a Nvidia 8800GTS and also tried with an ATI HighDef card.
It works on XP but not Vista.
There's many features in the Nvidia software running XP that are not in Vista. ATI is similar, some more features in XP than Vista.
When or if you did get the dual-head display working it's dependent on how fast your video card can switch the 2nd monitor on & off from it's normal display to the full screen video mode. This causes a delay when previewing & playing back video in the VS interface. I wouldn't use this feature on my HDTV because of the required video mode switching back & forth between the 2 different resolutions.
It's OK for playing back long segments.
