Still Image and Video clip on same screen

Post by Gordy »

Is it possible to have a still image and a video clip playing on a same screen using VS11?
I am working on a kids hockey video with their hilites for the year.
As an introduction I would like to have the players still image to the right side of the screen (appr 1/3 of the screen) and to the left side (appr 2/3 of screen) I would like to have a video clip playing.

Would it be possible to do that using Video Studio 11?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes it sure is...

The best way to explain this is with TakoneFlix tutorial on Split Screen...

As part of the tutorial:
From Camcorder to DVD with VideoStudio (Editing Phase) in the topic heading "Overlay Tracks" (Currently still under construction) I recalled that some 18 months ago I used a split screen effect with the distort feature and created a representation of the corner of a room.

On one "wall" I projected a video whilst on the other "Wall" I projected a slide show. I think it makes an interesting variation to the normal day to day home movie (for a short clip only of course).

Vidoman: thanks for the link, It will be very helpful.

SJJ1805: Nice video, I would like to know how we get these templates like the "wall template" you are using in this video. That looks awesome.

Thanks Guys

I created that some time ago perhaps 18 months - 2 years so no longer have the source files. The effect is in fact easy to do. You could of course do the first step using a couple of solid color blocks on overlay tracks but it is easier and you get a nicer effect if you use an image editor and add a texture fill.

Step 1: create a split background like this:

Step 2: Look through your photo collection or even get your camera out and take a quick snap of the back of a settee and then extract it with an image editor.
Image

Step 3: place it in position at the bottom of the screen
Image

Step 4: place your left hand video on an overlay track and then use the distort option. The following screen shots from the tutorial Overlay tracks describe the procedure:

You can distort the image by dragging the distort handles located in the 4 corners of the clip

Grid lines
You can also display grid lines on the preview screen to enable you to position your overlay clips more accurately.

You can alter the number of grid lines by clicking the grid line options button.

Border
When you place a video or image on an overlay track you can add a border to the clip
Image

Step 5: It is then simply a matter of distorting your clip

Step 6: Repeat the steps 4 and 5 for the right hand clip and simply align them until they look right.

Wow, that is neat.
thanks for the tips.
I cant wait to try that.
Now I regret not purchasing the plus version, when comparing at the time of purchase I didnt think I would need the features in that version.

I guess I will have to scrounge up $60 for the upgrade to the plus version.

Thanks for all you help guys.

How do you have time to post replies like this all the time, do you just sit at home waiting for the next "challenge"? :) :D
