VS11+ closes when selecting AVI tab in project settings

Working on vistahomepremium and VS11+ and was following a tutorial on changing AVI properties to experiment with DivX codec. VS stopped working and closed out. Here was what I did:

I drag an avi clip to the timeline. I get the screen that asks me if I want to change the project settings to match the video properties:

Project Properties are:
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo

Video Properties are:
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 4:3, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- NTSC, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

I select "yes"

Then from the "file" menu I select project properties, then select EDIT. There are 3 tabs to choose from:

Ulead Video Studio: TV standard set to NTSC drop fram (29.97 fps), and the Perform Non-square Pixel rendering is checked, and Audio Channels is set to "Stereo".

The General tab: Data Track is Audio and Video, Frame Rate is 29.97, Frame type is Lower Field First, Frame Size is Standard 720 x 480, Display aspect ration is 4:3.

The AVI tab: IF I click on this tab - The program IMMEDIATELY stops working and closes out....

Does anyone have any ideas as to why and maybe how to fix it? Thanks in advance !

To try and narrow this down, have you;
  • Tried different DV video files?
If not try placing other video files into the timeline and see the same occurs.
  • Does VS suddenly close when doing any other functions?
  • Do you have any other video file formats (MPEG, for example) on you PC ? If so try repeating the process, except, change the File Type to AVI, before going to the Edit dialog. Does it still crash?
  • Tried re-booting your PC? Sometimes a program will get a glitch, and can be corrected by re-booting the machine.
  • Does VS allow you to work on (edit) the video clip otherwise?
  • Does this crashing occur sporadically, every time, or frequently?
  • Have you updated your System, or DirectX recently?
The most current DirectX is dated Nov 2007. If you haven't updated them, then go to MicorSoft's site, download and install the latest.

tried different video files: yes, mpg and wmv...same thing happens with all those files.

this instance is the ONLY time VS has 'closed out on me'. I does the same thing each time when I select the AVI tab = otherwise has worked very well.

changed the file type to AVI - yes, and it still crashes

tried rebooting - 10 times to be exact

VS closes, I go back in and don't change anything and I can edit the clips

I have updated my system - I will double check that I have the latest DirectX update.....

I have all necessary updates...I have DirectX 10

Have you recently installed any mega codec pack? They quite often cause the sort of problem you are describing as one or more of the codecs in them conflict with the existing codecs installed by Windows and Video Studio...

I installed a Vista Codec Pack about a month ago. This is the first time that I have tried to go into any project settings to modify anything. So I don't know if this problem existed before installing the vista codec pack or not.

My own inclination would be to uninstall the codec pack and see if that improves VS's behaviour...

Thank you.....I will see if I can figure out how to uninstall it, first I have to find it !

A starting point would be in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Usually those codec packs are installed like any other program and thus have their own listing which makes it easier to uninstall.

Thank you again....I have unintalled the vista codec pack.

When I go to the AVI tab, it does not close out...however, there are only three choices under the compression, no DivX choice. The three that I have are DV type1, DV type2, and mjpeg. Does this mean I need to download the DivX codecs? If so, do you know of a link? thanks again !

I think I can help with that. The free DivX codec can be found here:

Yes, simply go to DivX.com and download the free, public version of version 6.8 of the DivX codec. That way you are getting it from the developers of it, and you can be assured of its quality.

You could also do a Google search for the public domain (i.e. freeware) XVid codec which some claim is better than DivX.

To hedge my bets, I have both -- and indeed lashed out some years ago and bought the professional version of DivX. In fact, as you will see on the site, there is currently a special price offer for the DivX Pro bundle. IIRC, it is half price at US$9.99. Definitely worth the price IMHO!!

I've downloaded the DivX codecs and did a reboot. Went back into VS and did the same procedure as above. Under the AVI tab, there are still only the 3 choices, DV1, DV2, Mjpeg...no choice for DivX. Can you give me any guidance as to how to get the DivX codec into Ulead VS?

When you say you rebooted, do you mean you turn off the computer and switched it back on, or do you just mean that you switched off VS and then switched it back on? I certainly don't mean to insult your intelligence or experience with computers, but some people use the term reboot for both the above actions...

In my experience, once I have loaded Divx or its updates, it invariably shows up as one of the codecs which can be used under AVI when I restart the computer.

Can I also ask exactly where you are looking for the codec? Is it just among the choices that appear when you select Share > Create Disc? Or is it when you do that, then select Custom down the bottom of the drop down menu, then select AVI as the format, then click the Options button. When you move over to the third tab labelled AVI, then in the Compression window 'None' appears by default. But in the drop down, I have 12 different codecs, including those you mentioned, plus Indeo codecs and DivX Pro 6.8 and XVid... and I only installed the Xvid one yesterday!

I totally shut down the computer and started it back up again.

The AVI tab that I am looking at is in "Edit" mode on VS. I drag my video clip to the time line, then go to File, Project Properties, I change Edit File Format to AVI, then the Edit button, then I get 3 tabs, one of which is AVI, and in the dropdown I only have 3 choices mentioned before. I do not have anything different than before I installed the DivX codec. The things you mentioned re: Share - Create Disc, Custom - I don't have any AVI choices in that window. I went thru the 'install' process after downloading the DivX codec, so I can only assume that they have installed.

Sorry, I made a mistake. I had meant to say Share > Create Video File > Custom (not Create Disc). When you select that, a dialog box comes up where the cursor is blinking in the Name box. Below that you can choose between mpeg format or AVI format. If you choose AVI then Options, then in the new dialogue box which appears, the third tab is labelled AVI, and DivX should appear in the Compression drop down...
