Can you save project settings as the default?

Post by westlight »

Working with VS 11 Plus (updated).

Is there a way to keep the "project" settings I enter as the default. I'm creating several short videos of various clips, all from the same camera and each time I start a new project I have to re-enter the settings.

No big deal, just annoying.

Thanks, David

Tools > Make Movie Template Manager. That will allow you to create a template with the properties you want. Give it a name, and after that it will appear down the bottom of the list when next you choose Share > Create Video File...

Thanks for your reply.

I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing. It sounds like what you're describing is the settings when I actually go to render a project and burn it to a disk or to another media source?

What I'm referring to is the project settings when I am just beginning a new project and haven't added any clips from the library to the timeline yet. An example.

I start with File>New Project
Then I have go to "File>Project Properties>Project Options>Edit>Compression
Each time the media type defaults to NTSCDVD and I have to change it to MPEG 2. Video rate defaults to 8,000 and I have to change it to 16,000 and the audio frequency and audio bit rate always have to be changed. Then, I have to go back to the General Tab and change the default settings of the Frame type and frame size.

I am shooting with the Canon HG10 at a ratio of 16:9, Upper Field First (VS defaults to Lower Field First) and 1400x1080 (VS defaults to 720x480). Again, I have to changes these settings each time I start a new project.

How are the defaults selected to begin with and more important can these defaults be changed? Hope we're not talking about the same thing. I'm very new to using this program.

Thanks

I know exactly what you want, and, your best bet is to post it in the "wish list" for future versions. Really dumb that it doesn't do that. I use MSP and you can do that there. MSP is a Ulead product, but, you may or may not be able to get it now, since the Corel buyout. (It's the prosumer version of video editing they offer, Media Studio Pro) Blows VS out the water in every respect. However, it only works with XP and not really supported anymore. Unfortunate, as, MSP probably the best for cost software around. BTW, just became a fan of your work..

You can change the default field order in the Preferences Dialog. That's about it.

I agree there should be a way to setup a project template, and we should be able to set it as the default. However for that functionality, there's MSP8. If you really need features like that, you might give it look see..

Hi westlight

Once you have created the first project containing the required properties, save it as say (my template)

Open this template each time you wish to capture, then re-save, Save As giving it a new name. Now capture.

Sorry best I can do.

Mr. A, Glad to hear I have a new fan. Some of the video from my last trip photographing polar bear in northern Canada is being posted on the site. Still very much a work in progress but... www.westlight.net/video.html I'm much better with the still camera!

Thanks also to the others with suggestions. I think I'll give the "template" route a try.

Any suggestions on how best to set up a page on my site to feature short video clips would be appreciated. Toyed with the idea of using "Flash" but for the moment I've just been converting my .vsp file to .wmv @24 bit, 320x240, 30 fps. I know this format isn't compatible with all viewers but figured it was a start. I'll make a separate post of this question as well.

Thanks!

I just bought a new Nikon, and photography isn't my best, I am more comfortable with video. But, I want to learn. :P

As for your site, I'd go with flash video. If for anything, it will protect your content from being copied. (you can not copy a flash video) Anything else, users would be able to download the video directly. You could heavily watermark the content though, but, that does take away from the artistic side of the work.

For flash video, use a dual pass encoding to get the optimal quality. Two products to check out are Sorenson or ON2. Just google or yahoo them for more info.

I would also recommend Flash video. It is cross browser and platform. The quality for streaming is outstanding with the smallest file sizes compared to other media.
Now using Adobe Premiere and Photoshop
