If i place a jpeg onto the timeline, does it become a fixed length of time or do i have the option to "elongate" it without distorting the picture (can i set it to display for 10 secs?)

Hi,

You can set the length of the clip in preferences or stretch it in the timeline.

hi again,
this seems a silly question ....more pixels in the photos the better?
Is there like a minimum amount that would do fine played back in video studio.....

cheers

You are correct, the more pixels the clearer the picture.

I've used a 2 mega-pixel pictures in many of my productions and they look great on a 36" tv screen.

For a static image full frame image I crop them to a 4:3 ratio (or 16:9) to maintain the correct aspect. If you have photoimpact there's a preset for this. Then I'll apply a slight blur, convert to NTSC safe colors and resize to 720x480 or whatever resolution I'm working with.

Preparing the image in a photo editing app seems to work better than letting the editors do it for you, at least in my experience.

Hi all,
oh dear!.......i may be out of my league here regarding issue of placing photos into timeline.
My main issue is making sure that each photo is effective in its raw (initially procured) state. I have been storing some that read..
180 x 120 pixels (8 bits per pixel)
290 x 400 pixels (24 bits per pixel)

will these measures do as raw photos?

and i have photoshop 5. Will this software do the trick with the preparedness that coalman suggests?

can anyone point me to somewhere to learn these "tricks"

cheers

Those are relatively small even for video which is small itself.
If you use them full screen they will need to be resized up
by either the video editor or within a image editing app.

Resizing up is never good, you can't add information to
image. What you get is a large blurry image since the editor
has to "guess" what to add from whatever information is currently available.

Here's an example of an image as it was taken:

This one has been signifigantly reduced in size then enlarged.
This ios equvalant to what you will be doing since images that
small will need to be enlarged:

This is from a thread at www.videohelp.com regarding extracting images from a video for use on DVD cover if anyone is interested. A lot of the info pertains to what your doinf Peacefrog, not specifically but in general. Very good read, I wrote a lot of it myself. :D http://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=237634
