HDV

Post by Keith »

Hi All

I'm sure this has been covered somewhere but could someone help me with editing HDV in MSP8. (First attempt)

I have just bought a Sony HDR-SR8E. It records in both SD and HD. I have tried a couple of tests and the SD files import okay, but MSP8 doesn't even see the HD files. What's the go?

They are MPEG-2 Transport Stream files. The files are fine as I can view them using Nero.

Help please.
Thanks

Sorry to disappoint but your camera is not a HDV camera. It records in high definition in MP4 based AVCHD format as apposed to MP2 based HDV. As far as I'm aware, MSP8 does not have AVCHD support. It is a very new file type, and as such only a few of the latest editors support it. Final Cut Pro 6 does, but only the hard drive based AVCHD, not the SD card based files.
Nero does read the AVCHD filetype, and will convert it for you to a range of different formats. However, you would probably be best to just record in DV as I'm sure this would be better quality than a converted AVCHD file.

Thanks for that. I guess with no upgrades for MSP on the horizon I may have to look at an alternative system such as Final Cut Pro 6 or Sony Vegas.

What a shame that Corel are not keeping up.

MSP7 HDV Compatibility

Post by redarke »

Hello,

I am using MSP7, and have been for a little while. Now I'm about to begin shooting in HDV, with a Sony Handycam HDR-FX1E. Is the standard MSP7 build capable of handling HDV? Do I need to add a plugin or upgrade, or should I look to upgrade to MSP8 or look elsewhere? I just want to make sure I have all the equipment and software I need before I embark on this project.

Thanks, James.

James,
MSP7 does not support HDV editing natively, one would need to purchase the Ulead HD Plugin 2.0. If I recall correctly, that plugin supported the Sony FX1 cam. Problem is, I think it can no longer be purchased. Best bet would be to contact Corel/Ulead if you want to pursue that route, otherwise getting Video Studio or MSP8 will do.
