How do I render HD 0-255 not 16-235 ?

Jack_HDV,
You have the correct location for Vista, that is the one to edit.
Sometimes though such as in MF5 if I activated this feature it would break the variable bit rate encoding. I don't think is an issue with VS (any version).

I didn't know those standards under the advanced section for the Color primaries but thought it helpful to point them out..
I think this is related to the color space of pictures/video.

Would it make any difference to make the changes in the jpeg image, so 0=16.
I guess this would be a reference to the pictures color space.

I'm curious if you converted the picture(s) to DV-Type1 if that would retain the absolute black level, then convert the DV-Type1 to Mpeg2 Video.

I'm going to save your jpeg as a reference file to learn more about proper color space conversions. Always something new for one to learn in this field.

Just as a matter of interest, in the burning module, when you click on the first of the three icons in the bottom left of screen (Settings and Options) and then select Preferences, under the Advanced tab, is your box 'NTSC/PAL safe color' ticked or unticked? And do you have 'Apply color filter' checked or unchecked in File > Preferences > Edit (top) of the main editor?

I am not even sure it is related to your problem, but I guess it is worth trying everything...

Thanks for the reply Ken, I just wanted to make a stand alone file, not burn a disc, but I checked the burning module and Safe color is not checked. Also the apply color filter is not checked in the main edit prefs.

The Apply Color Filter seems like it should be the one, but it seems to have no effect on the rendered file as far as levels anyhow in my tests.

So, what is the latest news on this?

This thread is right spot on what I was looking at, even two years earlier. The DVD video is better on a TV set, but still somewhat washed out and the black is not blacks, compared to the DV material.
This is me trying to formulate my frustration 4 years ago.

I would be a lot easier to encode everything from inside VS instead of exporting the video and sound ( I want the 5.1 Dolby) separate and use another MPEG encoder for the video with better quality. Then multiplexing and hope for audio/video in sync.
Maybe 99% of the users are satisfied with the VS encoding capabilitys?
