Now here's one that should test the minds of you VS wizards.

I've edited HD footage of a birthday party ('Party') and saved it as a MPEG file (share/create video file/HD DVD/PAL HD DVD 1440). This is one of a number of projects from the same holiday, using the same camera and MiniDV tapes (Sony HCR 1E).

I can double click on the icon and the ' Party' file plays perfectly in Windows Media Centre.

I then wanted to create the 'epic' DVD of the holiday and opened a new project dropping in various MPEG files including 'Party'. All files were created in the same way.

Now here's the strange thing.

When I run the project everything is fine until it gets to the 'Party' clip at which point there is total silence.
When I right click on the 'Party' clip and check the properties the Audio box simply says "Audio type: None"

So how come there is sound when I play the MPEG file but not when I drop it into VS?

And maybe it is a corrupted MPEG file.
But why does it still happen when I create another copy of the 'Party' MPEG from the project file (having first deleted the old MPEG file)?

What I did notice was that when I created a second MPEG (having deleted the first) was that I got the two bars telling me how what % of time I would be saving. I assume this is something to do with Smart Render. This suggests that simply deleting the old MPEG does force the creation of a completely new one. That data relating to rendering is held in the Project file not in the MPEG?

Thoughts on how to create a nice, shiny, new MPEG please.

Can you right clip on "Party' and give us *all* its properties please? And right click on one of the files which *does* work, and copy its properties here too if they are in any way different. Thanks in advance...

This explains how to post images to the forums..

http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/faq.php?mode=bbcode#9

You need to upload your image to a free hosting service, like ImagesShack, which I use. ImageShack will provide you with the correct BBCode to hotlink the image.

Guys,

I think SJJ nailed it. I think the MPEG file for 'Party' was corrupt.

I tried deleting the MPEG then creating a new video file with exactly the same settings as before but this time, when offered the time saving stats clicked on cancel. I assume this stopped Smart Render and gave me a brand new MPEG. However I got there I now have a brand new MPEG with sound that appears to be working properly when dropped into a new Project.

Let's see what happens.

If I have further problems you will be the first to know.

If necessary I will even write down the properties as Ken suggests.

Ken, do you have a link that shows me how to write with a pen?
