Incorrect Aspect Ratio

Post by tanman »

I am having a problem with Movie Factory 6 plus. I made a DVD successfully when I captured a video into the MPEG format but the quality was a little low <1GB for 20 minutes. So I switched to AVI. When I put that avi into Movie Factory it automatically switches the aspect ration to 16:9. I tried to put in the old MPEG clip and it correctly sets the aspect ratio to 4:3. I know the clip itself was captured correctly as when I view both videos side by side in BSplayer the aspect ration is correct. The problem is when I try to put an AVI file into Movie Maker is switches the file to 16:9

I cannot switch the aspect ratio of the project as that is correctly set to 4:3 I already authored the DVD and the menus are outputting at the correct aspect ratio but the video itself is all squished.

My camcorder is a panasonic GS120 and I am shooting at a masked 4:3. In other words it is outputting at 4:3 but it is masked to 16:9

I did do a search and I think this is the problem but I don't know how to fix it in Move factory.

After you insert the DV.AVI file into the timeline then "Right_Click" on it and select "Media Properties" to view the video/audio properties of the dv file..
Is MF reading the file as 4:3 or 16:9.

It sounds like MF is interpreting the original file as 16:9 AR when as you say it's 4:3 AR.

Why do you think an AVI file is going to give you better quality? That goes for the editing stage only and only for DV-AVI. AVI is as descriptive for video files as bucket is for liquids. AVI by itself doesn't mean anything, it's just a container.

Even though you loaded an AVI file into MF, it still needs to convert it to mpeg2 in order to author it to disk.
